Hey guys, I recently got accepted to Detroit Mercy's 7 year bs/dds. I'm really happy that I was accepted but now I have a dilemma... I was planning on majoring in biomedical engineering at Michigan with pre-med prereqs and then onto med school at Michigan... Personally, I'd be fine being a dentist or a doctor, however I do want to be a doctor more. The fact that Detroit Mercy is guaranteed is super tempting though (as long as I don't slip in grades)! Anyways, please give me your input on what you would do if you were in my situation... Reasoning would be nice so I can think over them when making the decision in April/May.

P.S. For anybody that wants to know my stats.... here you go:
ACT: 34
GPA: UW: 3.7 W: 4.3
Rank: Top 10-15%

I realize I posted this thread in hSDN but I would like more feedback. Thanks!

is act mcat spelled incorrectly? and you went to UW? your credentials are not exactly relevant anyways

seems like you need to shadow

No... It's UW=unweighted GPA. And that is my ACT score. That is for anybody that might have been curious on what my credentials might have been... You do realize that I'm a high schooler, right?

Have you been accepted at both schools? I would probably go to the 7 year program so that I have the option of going into dschool. But if I realize dschool isn't for me I'd still have a pre-med degree under my belt that would allow me to apply to other med schools like Michigan in your case.

well the 7 year program enables you to forget worrying much about the application process (stress and worry of acceptance) to dental school. However, that said, if you dont like dentistry, you can opt out and get your BS, BUT you would've had to have maintained a good GPA at UDM to apply to medical school.

Yes, I've been accepted to both schools. If I make the decision, I'm going to stick to it no matter what. I think if I go the MIchigan route, I can still do dental or med... The problem with that is that it's not guaranteed as you said. So that's why I'm having such a difficult time making the decision. Also, Detroit Mercy is an extra year I don't have to pay for which is almost 30,000$ which is very nice. But I think I'll miss out a lot on the social things since Detroit Mercy doesn't have frats (?) and they don't have the big extra curricular activites that michigan offers...

there are always frats in every major institution. As far as extra-curricular, that's up to you, you have to make the opportunity come to you. I'm sure you can find enough at both schools.

here's your answer to frats:

If you want the full college experience, definitely choose Michigan. If you're about going to school to do work, choose UDM. (I opted for the full college experience, but looking back I probably would've gone the other route to avoid the headaches of applying to ds).

Dude that program is for high-schoolers who are not only dead-set on becoming a dentist but also dead-set on going to Detroit-Mercy. You shouldn't have even applied if you weren't even sure.

I would hate to limit myself to Detroit-Mercy which is considerably more expensive and less prestigious than your state's dental school, UW.

Go to Michigan and find out what you really want to do for the rest of your life. Shaving off one year pursuing a dental education is not worth it if you end living a life of regret based on a stupid decision that you made in high school. If you end up as a dentist and find out you hate what you do, having patients who also explicitly tell you that they also hate coming to you, isn't going to make for a great life.

washington is not his state, UW = unweighted gpa

That's hilarious. Thanks. 😀

I don't see how going to that accelerated program is a win when you could go to a more affordable dental school and save a fortune or if you decide to pursue medicine instead of dentistry.

If I were in your shoes and was accepted to a 7-year accelerated program at a private (expensive) dental school like Detroit-Mercy, I would decline that offer.

detroit mercy is well known for its clinical prowess

I was in the same position 3 years ago, and I opted to go to Michigan to study biomedical engineering lol. It only took one campus visit to each school to make that choice. It was hard to turn down the guaranteed program, but Michigan is a school where you go to find out more about yourself. The opportunities here are truly amazing. What is one more year of school when you are having the best time of your life. You only get to experience college once so you might as well make the most of it

are you seriously considering to turn down Mercy just to have " college experience " ? ...

you are still in high school .. so you still young. are you sure that you want to be doctor ? who knows you might like being dentist even more.

take me for example .. 7 months ago. when i was still in hs i always told myself NO to medicine. but look at me now 🙂 dreaming to travel 8 years into the future and get it on with my patients.

please .. take your time thinking and don't rush it. keep playing with these schools until you finally decide which one to go and which one to turn down.

Good luck.

My recommendation is that you go to Michigan. It doesn't make any sense to me to commit yourself to a career that you are not in love with...have you ever shadowed a dentist before or had any relevant dental experiences? Make sure you have those and are dead set on dentistry.

I know that I changed my mind on my career path several times in my undergraduate. My advice would be to go to Michigan, do as well as you can and at the end you hopefully will know which career path you want to pursue; as long as you do well in school, which it seems like your capable of with a 34 ACT, you should have options at the end of your undergrad.

Its very difficult to answer this for you because everyone has their own reasons.... ultimately... wanna be a physician or a dentist? see, only you can answer this.

however, I'll tell you my reasons why I went with dentistry instead of medicine (I was pre-med initially). I didn't wanna deal with the residency years as a medical doctor.... minimum of 3 years of residency (after med school) wasn't appealing at all, considering I started Dental school at age 30.

another reason is, I do wanna own my business someday, so dentistry is definitely a good career choice.

For me, medicine vs dentistry = hours of work per week + years in schools + income potential + be my own boss -----> drove me into dentistry
