Hi,
I'm posting this here rather than calling Michigan because I saw a post about them receiving too many phone calls about their secondary application. My question isn't about how to fill it out; it is about requirements and a discrepancy between what is posted on their admissions page and the secondary application page.
If you go to UM's application requirements page:
http://www.med.umich.edu/medschool/admissions/process/req_details.htm
you will find the following:
"Chemistry: 8 semester hours (including laboratory work). General inorganic and organic chemistry, with at least three hours of laboratory work, are required. Work in qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, and physical chemistry is acceptable."
and
"Biology: 6 semester hours (including laboratory work). This requirement may be satisfied by six semester hours in either general biology or zoology, or by courses of three semester hours each in zoology and botany, but not botany alone. Some exposure to genetics is recommended."
However, when filling out the pre-med requirements page of the secondary they have listed:
"Chemistry. Eight hours minimum. Inorganic plus organic (including laboratory)."
and
"Biology. Two academic terms (one year) including a minimum of three hours of lab work. This requirement may be satisfied by courses in general biology or zoology and botany, but not by botany alone"
If you look at the portions I have bolded, you will see that the "minimum of three hours of lab work" jumps from chemistry to biology as you move from the requirements page to the secondary app. I believe that it belongs under chemistry as they want you to have 1 lab for inorganic chem I and II, and 1 lab for organic (for a total of 3 lab hours). However, if it really belongs under biology, then I'm in trouble and need to get on the biology bandwagon. Anyone have a definitive answer to this discrepancy? Perhaps it is worth contacting them about.
Also, would physiology count as a general biology class? I have one general bio class, one botany class, and one physiology class and am not sure that meets the requirements of one year of general biology (I don't have zoology to go along with botany). I have already graduated, but can take more classes if necessary.
I look forward to hearing your responses and thanks in advance.
