I’m looking for some advice to help me choose between Michigan State, and WesternU. A bit of insight I’m technically committed to MSU since that was the only school that accepted me before the April 15 deadline line. I’m currently on the waitlist for western however if I were to get off the waitlist list I would strongly consider attending.
So for me MSU is across the country and as we know offers a traditional teaching hospital, a spay/neuter clinic in Mexico, and strong NAVLE rates, which feels like a great fit for my goal of going straight into high-volume Emergency Medicine to pay off loans.
However, WesternU is only a 30-minute commute for home and since I'd be living at home, the cost of Western’s $67k tuition is offset by saving on the rent and food I’d have to pay at MSU, where the total is roughly $70k so tuition and cost of living.
My goals after graduation like I mentioned is to get straight into ER medicine. My concerns about western however is the rumors about their faculty leaving making the programs somewhat iffy. Their NAVLE scores being low compare to Michigan and the rumor that some clinics don’t want to work with westernU. A pro that I do see and perhaps current student can give me insight it is that it’s a small school so making connecting with specialist seem like a great option. Also connection at nearby clinics or the ones who work with westernU would be great since I do place to work in the Los Angeles Area.
One last personal factor is that my mom passed a few years ago leaving my pops and my sibling. So staying near home would allow me to help my dad around the house with my sister. Watch the dogs if he leaves town for work, etc.
With that being said what would all recommend? I know westernU is a good school and that my veterinary program is how much I make out of it but I essentially don’t want to miss out on any opportunity if I were to attend Michigan state.
