Which costs less?

IF they are the same cost, definitely go to Michigan.

Strange, you can get into Michigan out of state, but not UNC.

Did you ask them why?
Where did you do your undergrad?
Did you do it at UNC?

yeah same cost pretty much. Did undergrad at UNC and didn't get in there for DDS. I'm not real sure what hurt my app there, no use worrying now.
Why michigan though?

I think as a university, Michigan definitely has a better reputation than Maryland and more research funding.

I am actually a grad student at NCSU and in my field (biostatistics) their department is very good because of the high levels of research funding. So I think dental falls under the "medical" category.

Also, Ann Arbor is a better location than Baltimore!!! Baltimore and Detroit, well THEY Are quite similar!

I always thought Michigan was more expensive out of state. Are you sure it is the same as maryland out of state?

If there is not much difference, go to Michigan. There are definitely stronger alumni ties to big blue!!!

Michigan also has a very strong school of public health as well as a very good medical school. So I think there are definitely more research dollars. What was your impression when you visited both schools? Which one did you really like better? Do you just want to go into general dentistry or spend more years in school to specialize?

maryland is ranked 2nd in the country in terms of overall research funding granted from the federal government... with the exception of #1, which i believe is ucsf, you can't get any better.

also, maryland's medical school is in the top 20 in the country. now michigan also has a great med school, but why are you looking at that factor anyway? you want to go to dental school right?

finally, it's been said a thousand times, but i'll say it again - maryland's facilities are going to be absolutely top in the nation... just something to consider.

yeah research isnt very important to me, i know michigan prides itself on research and apparently maryland is #2 in terms of funding, so they're both good there. I'm pretty sure the costs are about equal. I'm considering specializing but I'm not dead set on it. Basically I'd like to keep my options open w/ that. Any one happen to know the specialization sucess rates, etc. for Maryland? I liked Ann Arbor and everyone at the school was very friendly/laid back, however Ann Arbor is pretty far from home and very cold. Maryland students/faculty where also very nice, though I am a bit concered about the city/crime, however I hear its getting better and that they are revitalizing the city and whatnot. I also get the feel that Maryland is definitely a program on the rise. Anyone know if there are viable options in terms of commuting in Maryland, and or places nearby that are nice/safe?

I will be living in Columbia, MD and commuting to Baltimore. I heard this from someone else on a post and looked into it. You should too. Its not that far away.

How much time is that in terms of rush hour traffic driving? Are you buying. I think i would consider buying in a suburb, but not real sure if the commute is feasible. Let me know if youve looked into that. Thanks

There are tons of suburbs to commute from... Owings Mills, Columbia, Ellicott City, Canton, Catonsville, etc. Tons of people in my class and classes below do this and don't complain hardly at all. I live only 2 blocks from the dental school and have never felt unsafe (but, that's because if you use your head and don't go out walking by yourself at night, you're less likely to run into a problem  ). I think MD was an absolutely amazing school in terms of clinical education. And, if you want to pursue specialty, the school is very supportive and has many opportunities to excel in all major specialties (I wanted OMS from day 1 and had plenty of support along the way 😎 ). To think that the school will continue on with excellent clinical training with the addition of the ridiculously amazing facilities and technological advancements makes me jealous of all the newbies (but not that jealous... can't wait to start surgery in July!! 😀 😀 ). I think MD is gonna be a big name in dentistry in the years to come (not that it hasn't been in the past, just more so). Good luck! These are 2 very good schools!

Actually at my interview AT Maryland I learned that its dental school was 3rd in the nation in research funding behind #1 Harvard and #2 Michigan

Actually, I'm AT Maryland and have no clue which schools have more funding, cuz it doesn't make a bit of difference 😀 😀 . Just playin with ya peck... The truth of the matter is that money is coming in from research, plenty of research opportunities available, excellent clinical training, sweet new facilities, opportunity to specialize in any major specialty, and I'm spent... Goin out to drink until I forget my own name :meanie: :meanie:

I am trying to decide which school to go to, Temple or Maryland and have a couple of questions regarding Maryland's clinical education b/c Temple's clinical education seems outstanding. Does Maryland require students to perform all of their own lab work related to the cases they take on in the clinic? Do you essentially run your own practice while in school at Maryland? Are you guys required to do a lot of all of the different procedures (ex: 100 extractions, 20 bridges, etc.)? Temple bragged about these two aspects of their school. Thanks for your help

The lab work required is only for fixed cases (i.e. trimming dies for crown and bridge and mounting casts) and for remo cases (i.e. mounting casts and setting teeth). Lab work can be somewhat cumbersome, but in no way unreasonable. You have your on weeks and your off weeks. I personally have done over 250 extractions if you're worried about that (you can basically do as little or as much as you want). We only have a 2 bridge requirement which is plenty considering most patients will opt for an implant (even if it needs a bone graft or what not). Still, I would put MD up against any school regarding clinical experience and learning. Honestly, any aspect of clinical dentistry you are interested in excelling at is at your disposal at MD. Best of luck!

I'm looking to buy a townhome in either Owings Mills/Reisterstown or Hunt Valley/Cockeysville. These are both areas out in the suburbs, last stops for the metro and light rail. I've been told to expect a 30 - 40 minute ride on either, but I'm assuming I'll be able to knock out some studying while in transit. There's enough housing around each of the stops that I might even sell my car and walk/bike to the metro/lightrail.

I got a real good feeling about UMD at my interview, but I'm not a city guy at all. Living in these areas, I can take advantage of the new school, but still live out in the open, and I won't sacrafice precious down time by spending an hour on the road each day. Housing is definitely expensive in Maryland, but certainly do-able. Check out the running thread we've got going for some more info.

I couldn't afford to move, sell the house, and force my wife to give up her good paying job to relocate. I ended up staying in Florida. But if I had to relocate Marlyand was my choice hands down. Of course I don't know anything about Michigan. Go with what feels right. If it's too close to call, which color do you like better, red or blue. Just kidding. Anyway, good luck and no matter what you choose I'm sure you'll be happy. Although the winter is very long in Michigan.
