Michigan

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm not a resident here, but this is my medical school (I'm applying for path this year, did rotations, and know some of the faculty and residents). The people in this program all seem really happy and work well together and do many things together outside of work. They do work hard - there are 14+ days on surgical path, but it's that way at most places --> nevertheless, they all say that this allows them to learn more, and they have enough time for themselves. In terms of job placement, many graduates/fellows stay in this area, and some become faculty here. There has been an increased number of people going into private practice recently, and the program is supportive of that. It seems like there isn't an overwhelming amount of grossing to be done by residents, and there is definitely time for previewing before sign-out. Overall, the faculty here are very into teaching (some more than others, of course). The only complaint I've heard from our residents is the amount of presentations you have to give on CP rotations. Forensics conferences are awesome. There is resident noon conference at 12 every friday --> faculty aren't allowed, and it's basically just a lunch-time presentation of residents showing around interesting slides of the week.

Let me know if you have any specific questions, I can ask the residents I know.

Thanks, that was super helpful. Do you know whether residents mostly sign out with fellows or with attendings?

Residents almost always sign out with attendings. Some services (like GI) let the fellow sign out one day a week in later months.

It is a great program which will allow you to pursue whatever career path you choose. Some residents are very research-oriented and the program works with them to help them arrange their schedule better. I think they actually just named a co-residency program director whose specific job is to work with research-oriented candidates.

The above post is right, grossing load has lessened over the past couple of years as more PAs have been hired.

I am a resident at Michigan. You can PM me if you have any specific questions 🙂
