Hi all, I have taken Bio 1 and am taking microbiology next semester. I am wondering if these two together will satisfy most med school's 1 year of bio coursework or if I will have to take Bio II as well.

Thanks,

CS

You'll need to take bio II for most med schools.

It's best to play it safe.

I believe you can only substitute other bio classes if your school doesn't have 1 whole year of general biology.

I think it depends on the school and on your situation and also what was covered in the class.

When I took general microbiology, I was told by the professor and (indirectly) by some admissions people that it should count. However, this seemed to be because it was a general micro course, rather than one with a specific focus (medical micro, for example? I'm not sure I fully understand this part), so I would definitely discuss the course with someone familiar with it and pre-med requirements.

(caveat: I had placed out of the one semester of intro to life science my school offered as general bio. This might have influenced things, also. Further, I am a junior, while I did get the input of a few admissions people on my situation, I have obviously not applied to medical school yet.)

Most med schools have 1 year of bio requirement? Mine all had 2 years I believe. I would think it would be in your best interest to take bio II regardless of the requirements. Is bio II not a pre-req for micro at your school?

If you have AP bio credit, there's a chance you'll be fine. If not, most schools are fairly rigid about expecting one full year of your school's Into Bio courses, but there are exceptions that you'll only know about if you call each school individually.

Really? I thought the requirement was just like '8 credits of biology'. General biology curriculum varies immensely from school to school so why would taking a course labeled "general biology" be a requirement?

My example would be how Bio 1 at my undergrad school used Berg's Biochemistry as the textbook and taught from the ground up (proteins, membranes, amino acids, up to elementary biochem), and its second semester was a strict genetics course. I'm doing a post-bacc and i considered taking bio 1 at this new school because it was intro to the heart, the kidney, other systems which I had never done. Instead, i'm taking a physiology course at a disadvantage to every other student who's seen this stuff at a more basic level in "general bio" - their version of general bio.

I would say it doesn't matter at all that you take a course labeled "bio 2". The only thing it would matter for is whether or not your courses in biology prepare you sufficiently for the MCAT. I had to take the MCAT not having been taught about the body systems so I had to teach it to myself.

I may be wrong, however, so I would appreciate if someone who feels the other way could link to evidence in their favor.

oh that kind of micro...

I though we were talking about starcraft micro.
