For those who have completed microbiology, how much did taking that class help for the MCAT? I've heard that taking human physiology or biochemistry is definately a good idea before taking the MCAT but what about microbiology? Also, was microbiology a fairly difficult course?

hi there, im a microbio major and i think taking a basic microbio course would DEFINITELY help you. i think if you take a college level upper div micro course, you should be able to handle any micro questions on the Mcat pretty comfortably. microbio is not even half as hard as physio or anatomy. but the i guess how challenging it is will depend on where you take the course! im not saying its CRUCIAL but if you have the time and you think you can manage it, definitely GO FOR IT! 👍

i took it here at uc irvine, and it was really easy, the only "hard" part about it is that u may need to memorize lots and lots and lots of bacteria, their shape, means of acquiring nutrients, and where they reside.

I took micro and genetics before I took the mcat. Looking back (after completing more classes - biochem and cellular bio), cell would have been a much better class to take.

I didn't take a microbiology course and I didn't really feel like there were any major gaps on the MCAT -- my intro bio covered very little micro too. I would recommend biochemistry more. Depending on how it's taught it could be more difficult than micro, but it'll help you on the MCAT. Human physiology or cell bio would be good too, but I would definitely say take some biochem, even if it's only a 1 semester course (although med schools like to see 2 semesters these days, I think).

I agree with taking physiology or biochem instead of microbio if you're just looking for better MCAT bio preparation. A genetics course would also be an excellent choice; the test has started emphasizing genetics more.

Yeah. I'm a micro major and I can tell you that all the micro on the MCAT is very VERY basic. Take physiology, it's the one thing I wish I had taken.
