Hey everyone!

So, for my next Biology class, I have to purchase a microscope. The one that the school offers is around $125. I do not want to purchase a "cheap" one that I would not use in vet school. Does anyone have suggestions on a good quality microscope that could be used in veterinary school that is also affordable? 😕

I appreciate your suggestions! 🙂

I'm pretty sure most, if not all, vet schools provide microscopes.

Yeah, I never had a need for my own microscope during vet school. We had access to the histology lab 24-7 which has really fantastic microscopes. Besides, you aren't allowed to take the slide sets home, so I don't know what I even would've done with my own microscope.

My thought is to get the minimum you need for your class. But maybe there are other vet schools where having your own microscope would be advantageous?

Depends on the school I think. They charge us 100$/year scope rental fee. I guess the OP could save that cost if their future school incurs that cost. That being said I don't know anyone who brings their own scope and I have no idea where you would store it.

PennVet told us that you have to rent or buy your own for the labs. Depending on the fee and how many times you have to "rent" one it sounds like purchasing one may not be a bad idea!

Its not to bad to rent really. Think I paid like $300 something to rent for two years. That covers any repairs and I get a portion if it refunded too.

If renting is the better option, what are some companies that rent their microscopes?

We don' even use microscopes here  Our histology is all done on the computer.

I think what they're saying is the school rents the microscopes to them, not that they went to a third party and rented microscopes.

Sorry I didn't clarify but this is how it works at Penn. We have a contract with a company that rents (and sold older scopes) to students.
