now that the job search is kicking in just wondering who took or will take a high paying middle of nowhere job just for the money. seems like the salaries can be double more saturated urban areas. how many years have you or do you plan to pull off in these locations to save some $$$.
thx

What kind of offers are out there for both of these types of locations?

There is a good chance you will not last in oneof those places and end up losing (tail, house to sell, etc.). Do not fall for this one.

I had two offers (interventional cards) that were ~$500K, but were quite rural and where I would have been the only interventionalist. The offers in more urban settings were in the $300-350K range. One in Seattle was something like $220K.

220k for interventional is pretty ridiculous. What were the general cardio offers like? Sub-200?

I don't really know. Probably around the same... generally speaking I don't think there is too much of a differential between interventional and general cards in most areas anymore. At least, that was my impression.
Yeah, I would have loved to live in the Seattle area but I just couldn't accept an offer that silly, and in a high-cost-of-living suburb too.

For general cards:

Middle of nowhere (I can see Canada)- Mainly 350-400K + awesome benefits + reasonable lifestyle

Urban (Chicago)-200K + not great benefits + poor work environment

From what I can tell, in places like Chicago, you're probably better off working as a hospitalist
