I've basically already run out of time and money and will only be able to interview at one of Northwestern, U of Chicago, Mayo, and Wash U. I know the most important thing is finding the right fit but unfortunately I won't be able to visit them all. Right now I think my ultimate goal is fellowship->academics, so i'm not sure if one of these programs is stronger in that track. Ideally i'd also like to have flexibility in where I end up practicing in the future. Are the reputations of all these programs relatively similar in terms of placement into fellowships and academics, and the only deciding factor being where I want to live? Sorry for one of these posts, but i'm stressing out about canceling a really great interview. Thanks

I vote Mayo - but I am biased. Email anything you want to know about the program. We have every fellowship and are particular strong in cardiac, pain, and regional.

If I was you, I would do Mayo. The name will carry you anywhere in the nation.

1a)Mayo
1b)Wash U

Both are excellent programs with outstanding national reputations. The other two are not.

i would think taking out a couple loans to enable yourself the opportunity to interview and possibly end up at the best program for your future would be worth it

Do you want to end up in the midwest? All are very good programs but in very different settings. Mayo is a behemoth. The do a lot of everything (well, except peds and ob, which they used send you elsewhere for), and they also train a butt-load of SRNAs. How important that is to you is hard to know. The two Chicago programs are also great, AND you get to be in Chicago, rather than Crotchester (I was raised in Mpls and did residency in Chicago, so I am allowed to hate on Rochester). I can't say anything about Wash U, other than that St Louis is a huge drag (well, maybe not compared to Rochester).

I can tell you that every one of my classmates at U of Chicago got the fellowship they wanted, if that's important to you.

In the end, the classic advice is that interviews are not the place to scrimp and save; find the money and make the time (easy for me to say). If you've got 15 other interviews in the bank, however, it probably doesn't matter. I loved my time in Chicago and I felt like the U of C was a great program for me (I've posted on this elsewhere if you want to search), so they still get my vote.

Living in St. Louis is much better than living in Rochester.

Writing out Washington University in St. Louis, and then explaining to the lay folk that no, that isn't the University of Washington, nor is it George Washington University, is a pain compared to saying, "Mayo".

To those that will hire you, WashU and Mayo are interchangeable in excellence.

Both are probably more regional than they care to admit, meaning most people they train are likely from and will likely remain in the central time zone, just like east, mountain, and west coast schools will train eastern, mountain, and pacific time zone doctors.
