Anyone had an interview recently for the Midwestern Glendale DPT program or is scheduled for one in the future? Any tips? I have one coming up at the end of the month!

If you don't mind me asking... when did you submit your apps? I applied to Midwestern- Glendale and still waiting to hear back from them for an interview. Thanks!

I submitted mid august, they received everything on sept 1...and I got the interview invitation on sept 6 🙂
When did you submit your app?

I submitted my app at the end of Sept. and they received it 10/4... so now I'm just waiting on them to give me an invite to interview. Good Luck to you!!!

If you don't mind sharing afterwards your experience, that would be great and very much appreciative. 😀
Also, what are your stats by the way? Thanks!

@Spartan2014 I also have an interview at the end of this month! See you there 🙂

I submitted my application in mid-september and heard back today that I have an interview. I will be going November 21st! Does anyone know how many they interview total?

Going Nov. 21 as well. 😀 I submitted PTCAS in a few weeks ago (mid-september) but still needed to do acute care hours (which I just completed). My PTCAS got processed within about a week and then Midwestern emailed me, within like 48 hours of my PTCAS saying it was processed, and said they have my app and that they just need to see those acute care hours for me to be complete in their system. I emailed back and said that I had the hours scheduled, and then I got an email to go into the system to schedule and interview just a couple days later before I even had those hours verified as complete. So the whole process was amazing fast and efficient. I don't know how many they interview, but their site says that last year they offered 111 acceptances to get 52 to matriculate, so I imagine they interview a couple hundred at least (?). I'd be interested to hear if anybody knows.

@knj27 I was told by someone in admissions that they interview around 200 people out of 1000ish applicants they get

That's about what I was guessing...if that were true then they would be offering acceptance to about half of the people they interview, and about half of those end up matriculating.

Hey guys I was at the September interview at Midwestern. The whole process is really laid back and welcoming. There is a writing portion during the course of the day to complete but it is nothing to worry over. The interview is 2 on 2 meaning two interviewers and two interviewees at the same time. All in all it finishes in about 3 hrs maybe a little more depending when you get your turn for interview. The questions are laid back as well but they do try to confuse you with one hard question but those questions usually have no right answer, if that makes any sense. Just relax and be yourself and you will kill it 🙂

This is what I've heard in the past about them as well. It's as much a day of them recruiting you as it is you getting interviewed. The 47% matriculation rate of students offered admission kinda speaks for itself. And it's not surprising either due to the extremely high cost of the program.

Thank you! it's good to know how they interview. Did you prepare at all and have you heard back from them about your interview?

I went to Midwestern so I can tell you a few things:

You get accepted quickly (like one or two weeks I think) after your interview; I guess I don't know what happens if you're rejected but I imagine it's a similar timeframe.

The school is GREAT but hella expensive (which is why I left- to save 100,000$ in loans).

People there were cool. The interview process seems to do a good job of finding seemingly well-rounded and personable students.

Lots turn it down due to cost so if they even do a waitlist (I'm not sure they do) I'd plan on getting in.

I'm honestly jealous of all you who end up going there. I switched to save money (and I will) but my time there was awesome- my state school...less so. If money was no object I'd pick Midwestern again!

Definitely. I grew up down the street from Midwestern and have known TONS of people who have gone there and they have all been really cool people and have all really liked the school. But the cost is discouraging. I think you're right that if you get interviewed there is a very high chance you'll get in at that point. I really want to go to NAU, because of cost and because I think its probably the best program in AZ, but I would love to go to Midwestern as well because I like the sound of their program a lot too, and it'd be like going back to my "old stompin' grounds" so to speak. But in the end I have to hope that Midwestern is just a practice interview for NAU because the cost of Midwestern seems to high to accept. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it! We'll see what happens...

Where did you end up going? If you don't mind me asking, did you bail within a semester of starting midwestern and then take a year off or what?

@swolecat How long after they accepted you did you have to take the offer? When were you required to give them the deposit ($1000! :vomit:) before your spot got given away?

Since I'm interviewing Nov. 21 I figured I'll know by mid-December if I'm in. And I won't know if I'm in to NAU until early March! If I get into midwestern and pay the deposit so I don't lose my spot and then end up getting into NAU I'm just out 1000 bucks I guess...

I agree. It would be difficult to not pay the $1000 because if I choose not to pay in the event that I get accepted and don't get into any other program... well that would suck. I've been looking at the cost of this program and the cost of the other programs that I have applied to and this program seems to at least break it down the best with cost of living expenses as well. It is costly, but every other program only shows the cost of tuition.

Where are you seeing this for Midwestern? All I've looked at is their tuition and fees page.

And either way, just tuition and fees for the PT program is $35000/yr...since they claim that tuition goes up 4-7% each year, and if you factor in the cost of books and any other costs associated with being in the program, that's going to be ~$120k for the degree before living expenses. As far as I can tell, that's above average even for private schools.

You should look at the cost for Western University in CA... they estimate about $180k for 3 years including all costs (R&B, tuition, books, fees, external expenses). So no matter where you go, if you're not living at home or have a scholarship expect to be over at least $120k in debt. Even at NOVA, tuition is $27k and R&B is cheaper than living in Los Angeles. However, I am already expecting that the cost of it all will be around $120k I would imagine.

@ashnicolee43, I have actually seen that pdf before, I forgot about that. You don't really need that living expenses budget though, those numbers are just guesses and you can figure out how much those things are actually going to cost you for yourself.

Midwestern is easily $200k if you were paying for all living expenses and school with loans. So yes, if you go private it is going to be brutal.

If you go to a cheaper state school and have a spouse who works and pays for cost of living, you can easily have only $50k in debt without having a scholarship or living at home though.

It's crazy to think that getting into these highly competitive programs isn't enough. You then have to worry about whether you can even afford the program 🙁 I just want to get accepted right now but I would be devastated to even think about turning a school down for financial reasons.

They give you a pretty tight window for your deposit- I'm gonna say less than 2 weeks.

And actually, I bailed halfway through a quarter when I got taken off the waitlist at my state school and went almost directly to it- no time off at all. Midwestern starts their PT program in May and most other programs start at the end of August. I lost all the work I had done (restarting cadaver lab and leaving a good grade on the first exam), boo, but got a pro-rated refund of the tuition costs for the quarter. Still, that experience down there cost me about 10 grand between the tuition I did pay, moving expenses down to Arizona and back, as well as breaking a lease.

Overall though, I stand to save nearly $100k by switching

Nice, sounds like you made the best choice in the long run. Glad to hear that you thought Midwestern was running a good program though.

And that sucks about the deposit....I guess I'm just gonna have to suck it up and pay it if I get in...

It's not that you'd have to turn it down because you couldn't access the money...with a few rare exceptions, you will always be able to borrow enough to pay for it...it's just a personal decision if of how much debt you are willing to take on...there have been a lot of threads with a lot of good (and some bad haha) opinions on the "economics" of becoming a PT...read up! 😀

Don't read too much though or the internet will just scare you out of going to PT school eventually ha

That's why I stopped reading. I know that I want to go no matter what. I was more wanting to see if any PTs now were giving advice on how they are dealing with it out of school.

I know some people had interviews today. How did they go? I interview December 18th.

I just had my interview and I thought I'd update for those waiting for their interview! Don't know if it'll be helpful but hopefully it will!
For those of you still waiting for an interview I wouldn't get too devastated because they said they are only 50% through the interview process. Keep hope alive!

As far as the process went, I'm sure you all know that you interview with one other interviewee as did I. What I didn't know is that the interview was only roughly 20 minutes. That means essentially you have 10 minutes to represent yourself. I was told to prepare A LOT for the questions such as "Why do you want to be a PT?" and "Why Midwestern?" neither of those were asked. I do think you should prepare from them just in case of course! Despite being told not to ramble, I know I did. I was fine until they made it pretty clear that they were on a time crunch and it had the opposite effect on me, I talked more. 😕 Don't do that! haha The first question they asked wasn't a serious question. I don't know if it was meant to throw us off or if it was meant to lighten the mood a bit. It did a little of both for me! be prepared to think quickly for those weird questions. I'm hoping that despite my rambling, my answers were sufficient! I believe its the only bad thing I did but I've heard it's the number one thing not to do.

I hope this helps anyone who is preparing for a Midwestern interview! Good luck and I hope all of you waiting will hear back soon!

I am a current student at MWU, feel free to message with any questions!

@ashnicolee43 I was expecting those questions as well during my interview in Oct! Although they didn't directly ask for it, I made sure I touched base on them so they know I was honestly interested in their program.

Loved the campus, thank god they do in person interviews-- couldn't imagine going to an out of state school having no idea what the campus is like lol. If you have an interview coming up, don't stress and just be honest! Also thought I'd add this: A lot of ppl I interviewed with found out the following Wednesday that they were accepted, so check your portals later this week!

@PT2Bee How expensive can housing get around campus? Do a lot of PT students live on campus or apts and where? What is a typical week like for first years? What do you like/dislike most about MWU?

I interviewed the same day as @ashnicolee43 and everything she said here was exactly my experience as well. It was really a pretty easy interview I thought, but I would definitely second the suggestion to make sure to answer efficiently and succinctly because I got cut off on a couple of questions so that the other guy could have a chance to answer. Don't give little short 1 sentence answers, but do try to answer as efficiently as possible. As others have said the whole interview day was really laid back and it is honestly nothing to stress too much about.

I was wondering with thanksgiving being this week if it would push things back a little for the admissions committee? What do you guys think?

If you don't hear tomorrow then ya I'm guessing it's not going to be Thursday or Friday lol. @Spartan2014 says that people in the Oct. interviews found out the Wednesday following their interview so we'll see... :hungover:

I split a two bedroom with a roommate and I pay about $550 in rent. Classmates live in on campus housing or one of two apartment complexes across the street. The on campus housing is kind of ugly IMO and is around the same price for off campus. Plus, it's nice to be able to just get off campus at the end of the day. Haha, "typical" week varies week to week. Rescheduled classes were rampant our first year and was a major source of complaint. Don't know if it's improved or not. If you go on the midwestern website you can find our class schedules, they aren't a secret. You can get a fairly good idea from there. Add in some rescheduled classes here and there and you get the jist.

Some schools take the whole week of thanksgiving off so I didn't know we would hear back differently than some who have had interviews. And I have also been checking the portal constantly!

Sooooo....I guess nobody has heard anything yet?

I was just about to ask the same thing... And no I still haven't heard anything. I'm definitely getting discouraged.

I figured the thing of notifications coming out the Wednesday after the interviews didn't happen this week because of the holiday...I was just curious but I wouldn't get discouraged until at least next week some time. 🙂

That's what I'm hoping! Let me know if you hear anything

Do they send you an email about your acceptance/rejection/waitlisting or is it just on the MWU portal?

@AP191 @swolecat @PT2Bee

I first noticed the portal but they send an email or letter, I forgot which.

They called me...hard to remember but pretty quickly. 1-2 weeks after the interview I think

Hmmm...maybe they did call me as well lol. So many damn emails and letters during application period I can't keep them all straight.

@knj27 Check the portal! I have a accepted student checklist! That means I'm in right?

@ashnicolee43 Congrats! That's how I found out I was accepted! Received an official email about a week later.
Unfortunately I declined my offer yesterday, so hopefully one of you guys waiting can take my spot!

@ander120 I wanted to wait until I got the official email/call to tell people but if it's going to take another week I don't think I can wait that long. 😀

@ashnicolee43 haha I also wanted to wait but couldn't. I ended up calling them before I received the official email to ask them a question. Had a mini heart attack when they told me they could not find an acceptance under Henderson... good thing my last name is Anderson! Otherwise I'd have to explain that I was wrong and actually had not been accepted.
