So I was googling civilian 2 year AEGD programs and it seems that with many of them, the 2nd year is just a continuation of the first year aimed at research and academics. Whereas in the military, the 2 year AEGD programs are aimed at building a clinical powerhouse, balanced with a strong didactic demand. But the 2 year mil programs are not a continuation of the 1 year AEGD, but different altogether; meaning people can do a 1 year AEGD, then say a credentialing tour, followed by a 2 year AEGD.
Unless I'm misunderstanding something, this sounds very unique. Does anyone know of any civilian programs comparable to the military 2 year programs?
Also, if I'm just really confused I was hoping somebody can straighten me out.
Thanks!

Yes there are a few and they can be found through the ADA website. When a civilian who has done a 2 yr AEGD/GPR (1 +1 = not a continual 2) comes into the Army, they are not given credit for having completed a 2 yr AEGD (Comprehensive Dental program). For the Army standard it must be a 2 yr program from the start. As you already alluded to, the difference is that the curriculum is designed to build upon the first year. With a 1+1 it is usually more of learning some advance skills/information the first year, and then having a 2nd year to continue to gain proficiency as well as mentor the first year residents.

There are not a lot of civilian programs that offer the 2 yr program. Two civilian programs that I know of off hand that are 2 yrs from the start is the VA program in Richmond, Va. There is also one out in New York - Long Island/Staten Island I believe. I had looked them up once through the ADA website - not sure if they still have a directory like that.

Right, I meant in the military, I should have clarified.
If let's say I go to dental school on my own using my GI bill and do the 2 year VA GPR as a civilian, THEN decide to come back in the military; after my initial obligation, do you think I would be eligible for the level 1 MYRB as though I completed the 2 year AEGD?
I'm just trying to gauge if the military would hold their 2 year AEGD comparable to a civilian 2 year GPR since they are both 2 year general dentistry residencies.
I also understand this would be an incredibly rare situation so it would all be speculation, so just trying to get some thoughts. Thanks folks!

Yes you would as long as it was not a 1+1 program. It would still have to be approved by someone within the Surgeon General's office when you apply - but it should not be a problem.

That being said, I have worked with some dentists that have gone through a civilian 2 yr program (not 1+1). I do not believe their ability level was anywhere close to that of an Army graduate. Some of them have recognized this and gone back through the Army program.

I'm currently deployed but stationed at a post where they offer a 2-year Comp. residency. The residency is very demanding and the graduates seemed very prepared clinically. Didactically, the program is insane! I use to sit in CE the 2 year comp. program would offer to the other officers and civilian dentists along with the residents. The residents knew everything about everything! They were constantly being quizzed throughout the CE. Clinically, I think it depends where you're stationed. At my post, they're big on OMFS and Prosthodontics however, they still are trained heavily in the other specialties.
