NAVY DDS 2010
For those of you who have not heard, here is a copy of the letter that the Surgeon General sent out via the Bureau of Medicine to the Navy to help in recruiting medical and dental officer. If you don't want to read it, it basically state that the Navy is authorized to give out accession bonuses fo $200,000 to get general dentists and $400,000 for critical wartime dental specialists during the FY 2007 (01OCT2007-30SEP2008). If there is anyone who will be graduating this coming year or has already graduated who is not a part of the military, you might want to consider this.

WE HAVE FAILED FOR FOUR YEARS TO RECRUIT THE MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS NECESSARY TO SUSTAIN OUR FUTURE COMBAT CAPABILITY, GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND ABILITY TO DELIVER CARE TO OUR FAMILIES. NOW IS THE TIME FOR US TO ACT. I HAVE ESTABLISHED A SENIOR BUMED LEADERSHIP CELL TO OVERSEE AND GUIDE THE EXECUTION OF A NAVY MEDICINE RECRUITING ACTION PLAN. THIS GROUP IS EMPOWERED TO OVERSEE THE DEVELOPMENT OF MARKETING MATERIALS, COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS THAT WILL INCREASE THE VISIBILITY OF NAVY MEDICINE TO THE MYRIAD OF QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS WE SEEK. I NEED ALL OF YOU TO TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN MEDICAL RECRUITING TO INCLUDE MANNING RECRUITING BOOTHS AND SPEAKING AT YOUR PROFESSIONAL MEETINGS, UNIVERSITIES AND THROUGH PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS. I INTEND TO TEAM NAVY MEDICINE DEPARTMENT OFFICERS UP WITH NAVY RECRUITERS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. I WILL FIRST TAP BUMED MANPOWER ASSETS AND THEN WILL ASK REGIONAL COMMANDERS TO ASSIST IN THIS UNDERTAKING. THE CHIEF OF NAVAL PERSONNEL HAS MADE MEDICAL RECRUITING THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY FOR THE NAVY RECRUITING COMMAND (NRC). WE WILL PARTNER WITH NRC TO ENSURE THAT WE HAVE A COORDINATED CAMPAIGN PLAN AND ULTIMATE SUCCESS. LEADERSHIP MUST REMAIN ENGAGED TO ENSURE WE ARE RETAINING THOSE OFFICERS AND ENLISTED PERSONNEL WHO WE NEED TO HAVE EITHER REMAIN ON ACTIVE DUTY OR TRANSITION TO THE RESERVES. THE MORE PEOPLE WE KEEP, THE LESS WE HAVE TO RECRUIT. WE MUST RECRUIT THE RIGHT NUMBER, MIX AND DIVERSITY OF PERSONNEL TO MEET NAVY MEDICINE REQUIREMENT FOR THE FUTURE.
