Military Anesthesiology Programs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Army: -National Capital Consortium (Walter Reed AMC and Bethesda) - also has pain and CCM fellowships...DC area
-San Antonia Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (Brooke AMC and Wilford-Hall MC)...San Antonio, Tx

Navy: -National Capital Consortium (WRAMC and Bethesda)...DC area
-Naval Medical Center San Diego...San Diego, CA
-Portsmouth Naval Medical Center...Portsmouth, VA

Air Force: -San Antonia Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (Brooke AMC and Wilford-Hall MC)...San Antonio, Tx

I can't speak to quality, as I'm just a lowly Army MS3. I know an intern at Walter-Reed's anesthesiology program, and will be rotating there in August (and hopefully returning for an ICU month in October), and possibly Brooke's program in September.

Thanks for the response. I'm very curious, especially after reading that MedicalCorpse guy's posts (and website). He was navy gas x 19 years.

I'm trying to get a better feel for military GME within Anesthesiology versus civi GME. From what I've read, some specialties in the military (surgery, for starters) are far below civi standards, but this could also be program bias versus poster bias.

Thanks.....

Yeah, I'm familiar with MedicalCorpse from the Military forum, and have also visited his site a few times. MilitaryMD would also know a good bit about Anesthesiology in the Navy, and the Bethesda program, as that's where he trained. From what I've heard through the aforementioned intern at WRAMC, they're fairly busy right now, with all the injured soldiers coming in from OEF and OIF. I would imagine, for the time being, that the ORs at Bethesda and Walter Reed will be pretty busy, thus making surgical, anesthesia, and critical care training better (or at least busier). I'll find out this fall, and can keep you posted. Are you just curious, or is there some greater reason for this querying?

I can attest to the navy's anesthesia program. They outsource a lot as their is a large amount of volume however the case diversity is that of a small community based program. The staff make it up with very good teaching daily didactics. Typically the residents score the top scores in the nation. Regional is huge on the level of duke or mayo and tons of regional research. The anesthesia machines are the best I believe the new drager model.Lots of crna independence which is a good thing in the navy. Downsides young attendings, the patient population (from a moral standpoint the best patients in world) but not the sickest asa1 2.Upsides great didactics, camaraderie, they send u to the best places to train for subspecialty rotations.

average at best...

I have the authority to say it because I'm the product of the Navy's crown jewel program....

and I got to chair the education committee at the Navy's workhorse program

why isn't the older guy wearing a hat?

No one wears combat fatigues in the OR either. Obviously a publicity photo. But, still funny. And, yes, I can read between the lines, Plankton. Don't worry.

Because it isn't a real patient (or that guy has the most plastic looking skin on the planet). Actually just to prove its a publicity photo the CPT is Air Force and the other two are Army (go 44th med BDE).

Is military GME all but lost?

What say you of the ideas floating around to privatize military medicine? Are people like MedicalCorpse, who tells of equipment horror stories, "General Nurse" horror stories, and facility horror stories, overdoing it, or spot on?

Thanks for the response..
