Military Couples Match?

Hey everyone,

Forgive me if this is already a topic somewhere that I have yet to find. I'm in the process of applying for a 3-year HPSP scholarship while my boyfriend is on a 4-year. We are both first year students, and as I weigh the pros and cons of the scholarship I've heard different reports on how easy it is to match together if both members of a couple are in the military. Obviously this is a bit down the road, but do they take marriages into account when matching into military residencies? I've heard both sides and am wondering what is true!

I’m not sure how it is now as I’ve been out of school over 20 years. My husband and I got married the 3rd year of med school. I was on a 4 year Navy HPSP and he was on a 3 year Navy HPSP. We wanted family medicine and of course wanted to match as a couple. They selected us for NADDS (navy active duty delay for specialists) so we did a civilian residency for 3 years (staying in the IRR) and then came on active duty upon finishing our residency. I think they are good about making sure couples do residency together. But it was a long time ago but it should be the same I hope.

Dual military Spousal (not boyfriend/girlfriend, unmarried partner, or fiancé/fiancée or not dual military) collocation is a priority during the military match. It doesn’t necessarily mean they will both get the specialty of their choice if one of them isn’t competitive, but they will almost certainly be put at the same location.

Just to be clear, if you are in the same service it is a lot easier then if you are in different services.

To reiterate as posted above, colocation is important for military spouses trying to match together. Please note, this may take priority over your specialty. I know 2 different couples this year where they matched as the same place as their spouse, but 1 person in each couple was matched into a specialty they didn't even rank (they were not competitive enough for their ranked specialties so they were given something else to ensure they were at the same location). This was for Navy. Trying to couples match does not make them more likely to place you in your specialty of choice at a given location.

In the Navy you only match into an internship. Everyone has to reapply for PGY2.

They will force you into an internship, but cannot force you into a full residency.

This is correct; however, usually they will call you if you aren’t going to match in either of the specialties you listed for internship. (Nowadays you basically have to rank more spots than there are for any one specialty so you end up with at least one spot being a different specialty than your first choice).

And yes, there are people who don’t match into either of their listed specialties, but that is pretty rare.
