hey.. i was interested in doing military psych...im in my first year of residency and was wondering if I should go ahead now and join or wait till im done residency and just work as a civilian in the military. Also, what are people's experiences in the military as a psychiatrist..good..bad?

On another topic..just wondering if the general consensus is that salaries are increasing alot for psych..any thoughts? Its seems like there is a greater demand..

Thanks

Though a pre-med, I have served in the military. My advice would be to wait, as military psych residency are much fewer and harder to get into than a civilian psych residency. The military WILL put you where they want you to include specialty, so if you are dead set on psych, I would wait.

Forgot which journal, I believe it was the American Journal of Psychiatry, but sometime after 9/11, when the country was united & supporting the military, one issue focused almost entirely on psychiatry issues with the military.

Some of the areas of focus were PTSD, substance abuse & malingering. Don't remember the issue.

Not true. The military will not force you into a specialty you do not want. If you do not get psych, you will do a GMO tour (an intern-trained generalist: think sick call) for 2-4 years until you place.

MLT2MT2DO is right about the competitiveness of the psych specialty in the military, though. There are not guarantees.

To get the full scoop, OP, check out the military forums on this site. A quick search on psych will give you all the dirt.
