A very random question: I have heard that the military offers a fairly intense, multi week public speaking course. I can't find out where it is, if its integrated into the war college vs a stand alone course that commands can request, or anything. Has anyone ever heard of someone being formally trained in public speaking by the military?

I have not heard of such a course, however, at least in the AF, members have often been encouraged to join Toastmasters as a way to improve public speaking skills.

Ask the Navy college office at 32nd st or north island. If it exists and is open to all officers, theyd know more about it. You could find your own course too (ucsd extension has a lot of such 'business' type courses) and seek tuition assistance to pay for it.

be prepared to make a bunch of really ugly powerpoint briefings.

Yes spokesperson training is available.

Several years ago I had to go because they were worried we would get invited to talk about the immunization program on camera.

The condensed course was 3 day intensive course that was done by beltway contractors who were skilled in teaching spin, lies of omission and redirection.

Biggest take home point was answer the question you want to answer regardless of what the reporter asked. Biggest skill here is to tie in so they think your addressing what they asked.

IDK how to get a longer course, and it may be a struggle to find it since the .mil may have disguised the name to hide it from the media.

From watching .mil and .gov speakers on camera I can assure you that the course exists and is widely taught at the O6 and higher level.

Good luck
