I was checking out residencies and saw one is at the army medical center. It says you will be on active duty as a resident.

In this residency, after you are done, will you have to pay back a certain amount of years? Also, it is 3 years and to my understanding, you have to be active duty at least 4 years before you can go into reserve. Anyone done this residency and can tell me the details? Thanks

Which program were you looking at? There are at least 2 that are in army hospitals although I believe neither require any service upon completion.

I think that the residency at Eisenhower/Womack Army Medical Centers requires service after completion, but Madigan doesn't. At Madigan you are a civilian and at the other residency you are a Capt in the Army.

PM me if you want. I worked USAF credentials for years, the programs are very similar.
Pro- You get paid very well for VERY good training.
Pro-You will see things you never thought you would (i.e.- battlefield injuries, etc)
Pro-You will work with and on some of the bravest, most dedicated people in the world!
Pro-travel, on the gov'ts dime.
Pro-This can go on and on.....

Con- Possibility of deployment AFTER residency
Con- Lots and lots of Green and Tan

As you can see i am a huge fan of the military and of their residency programs. I workeed for the USAF OMFS resdency program at Travis AFB in California for 8 years. Loved every minute of it. Learned so much, got to love the OR. Travis OMFS is why i want to get back into medicine.

The one I was researching was the Eisenhower/Womack Army Medical Centers one.

So I assume after 3 years of residency, you do 3 years of active duty? Is time served in residency count as active duty? (since it seems to pay active duty salary)

Tha may be a good option to go into.. after 3 years of service, you can go into reserve...

There was a podiatrist who did his residency there that used to frequent these forums (efs) but I haven't seen him on here in a few years. Here is an old thread that states that there is an 84 month active duty committment including the 36 month residency, so you would owe 4 years active duty following the residency. I am assuming that is still accurate. There are a few more threads about it on these forums if you search for posts by efs or just search for Womack.
