Do any of you have prior military service? Do you think being a veteran would be extremely beneficial, not so, or that it doesn't matter in the eyes of the admissions committee?

I don't know that military experience would get you into vet school. But it would show leadership, and they do look for that.

I don't know the answer to your question either. However, I wanted to post a reply because I think you can help determine the answer to your question. What I am thinking is that you can definitely identify KEY qualities from being in the military that helps you become a strong veterinary student. I don't think that the admissions committees are going to know these qualities off the top of their heads. However, you can write a good, and persuasive assay arguing why this is a positive quality. Discipline? Leadership? Hard work? Team work? Priority setting? I don't know. I am just guessing.

Does anyone know anything about the Armed Forces health scholarship? Is it worth it?

Thanks!

yeah, something like you commit to so many years of service and they pay off most or all of your loans (up to a pre-set amount).

if you don't mind where you live or what kind of vet med you want to practice, and you want to serve your country...then I would say go for it.

But, when you are a sailor, soldier; etc. you are essentially the property of the U.S. government and if the country needs you in Iraq, Afghanistan; etc...then that is where you'll go.

I would seriously consider it, but I already served 5 years on board a submarine and 3 years inactive reserve and now I have a wife and family that come first.

I think what agr1365 said is about right.. from what I understand, yeah, they pay for your school in return for a 3-4 year commitment, however you don't have much control over where you go or what you do. I know they have like, residencies (like, pathology and other things that would be useful to the military) and stuff, so that would be great, but on the other hand, there's always the possibility that they'll send you to Iraq to be a meat inspector at the slaughterhouses for 3 years... not my idea of a good time!

Of course, this is just what I've heard from my classmates and you know, general hearsay, in order to find out the real deal, you should contact a recruiter to hear what he/she says, and ask for the contact information of someone that received the scholarship and is now graduated and working with the military. I would want to talk to someone that's actually been through it, because from what I understand, sometimes the recruiter might tell you kinda what you want to hear and not exactly shoot you straight.
