I went to the ADA conference over the weekend and went to a lecture. He spent maybe 20 minutes on these mini implants. They seemed really cool for denture stabilization. They are only 1.8 mm wide so you can stick them in ridges that are very narrow. Just curious if any dental schools out there are able to place them??

They're really popular in Pacific (UOP), as well as the traditional implants.

Is there any dental school out there that lets predoctoral students PLACE dental implants?

At UNC we have a very extensive implant course in which both the Astra and ITI Strauman systems are taught (ad nauseum). Students are then able to sign up for an additional elective in which they are allowed to place the implant(s).

At Harvard we're required to do 8 perio surgeries for graduation and implants are included in that.

Leave it to perio to make you drag out a procedure as long as possible.

We have to assist two times before we place them ourselves.

Wow, I wasn't expecting that. Here at UCLA the only people placing implants are oral surgeons (and perio). No GPRs, AEGD, or Pros, and certainly not students. Have you guys/gals done implant surgery yet? Is it like clinic where you just do your thing and call the instructor when you're done or are they holding your hand? Are you limited in the cases you can do? Single implant? Entire ridge? Atrophic ridge? Anterior? Posterior? 1mm above the IA nerve? Stage I/II? IV Sed?

p.s. When I said 'place' I meant the entire surgery not just screwing in the implant.

p.p.s. Is there any school out there that lets students do pre-prosthetic bone grafts?!! Sinus lifts? Anyone? Bueler? (I sincerely hope not)
