I have a Mac which I am very happy with. I had a back-up laptop with was a PC which recently crashed and died in a semi-seriously fatal manner. I gave it to someone else and said, "If you can fix it, you can have it." So of course, he wound up being able to fix it.

Little manner to me, because I can't stand the sight of the thing, and I don't need another big laptop. I'm just interested in having a little PC to access to stuff I can't get to d/t our hospital system not supporting Safari. I don't need it for anything fancy; just e-mail, net, printing. The basics.

Anyone have any suggestions? (For the record, I will not get anything from Dell.)

LOL...I just remembered I have another back-top in a closet which is an hp. I wonder if I still remember the password to get into it. I'll bet it's been three years since I used it!

Maybe consider a NetBook like the Acer Aspire One? I've seen them at Costco for $299.

Dell makes some too, check out lifehacker.com on how to make these things into a "hackintosh".

Verizon Wireless is selling HP mini's for $199 right now... I know nothing about them - but it looked tempting.

Toshiba just came out with a netbook. I have a Toshiba laptop & would pretty much recommend anything they produce.

I followed the sage advice of Blue Dog and got an Acer One for about $299. Now that I'm used to working with a Mac, I'm trying to remember PC again, and this one is XP (whic is fine with me since I hated Vista).

The only major glitch so far was with MacAfee; I finally got so irritated I uninstalled it and put Avast on.

I feel like my Mac is staring at me saying "What did I do? Why did you abandon me?"

For those who rec. waiting for Mac note book, I need a PC so I can have IE8, which is the only system my hospital uses where you can access your payroll/benefits, etc. I refuse to put IE8 on my Mac. It's just not happening.

Oh, yeah...they also support Networks. But that's it. Not even Firefox.

Think of the PC like an old pickup truck. Occasionally, you just need something to haul crap around.

For everything else, there's Macintosh. 😉

Indeed. Here you go, Blue Dog, in honor of your dedication to helping me with my computer issues:

"My Hero!"

I pretty like the new Asus 1005 HA with a nice design, 10" screen and at least 8.5 hours of battery.
However, if Windows 7 was not being available on 22nd October, I would have already bought it. At the moment, I'm waiting for netbooks with Windows 7 because most, if not all of the Netbook with WinXP does not come with a free Windows 7 upgrade.

That didn't really phase me, because I really just need to use it for "dumb stuff." Like see my freaking paycheck. I'm not even putting Office on it; at least not for now. It came with a 60 day trial so maybe I'll put it on, but I doubt I'll spend the money for Office.

Funny, I got so used to working with the Mac that when I went to use the PC and had to C&P something I completely forgot how to do it and had to email someone (not Blue Dog!) to remind me what to do.

Had you considered just running windows in Parallels? So its their when you need it, and gone the rest of the time? No change of hardware necessary that way.

There is NO WAY I am befouling my Mac with any Microsoft product. Ever.

(It's safe to say I have "issues.")

I have a Mackbook that I use at home and for general needs. However, I use a Macbook air for all of my backup laptop types of work. (School, work, and presentations) It is more expensive than the competition; however, it has worked well thus far.

I would be lost using a Windows device as well.

What's wrong with a Macbook Pro using Bootcamp to boot into whatever Windows you want, on occasion? It works great.
