Hey everyone!

Does anyone have an idea of the minimum amount of time we should work with a physician during M3 year before asking for an LOR? I've worked with some physicians for 2 weeks, have had positive experiences and some have even offered to write a LOR already or say they're happy to have me back 4th year for electives. Is 2 weeks appropriate enough of a time frame to ask for a LOR, or is something like 3-4 weeks more ideal?

Thanks!!

The time it takes for them to like you a lot. Could be 1 week or 2 months. Good luck.

I asked people I worked with for a week, in some cases, since on inpatient rotations you may only work with an attending for that amount of time. It depends on how well you performed during that timeframe. You probably want to get the majority of your letters from fourth-year rotations, though.

I would say exactly 19 hours of time spent together in a professional setting.

If they are kind enough to offer, than any time is appropriate
If you want to ask, then it get's more tricky. It depends on the relationship, but the majority of my letters were around 2-3 weeks with an attending.

I asked for a letter today from an attending whom I briefly met only once.

What could they possibly say? That you made a good brief impression?

Having written a number of letters, it is much easier to write a meaningful letter for someone I know well.

“Write the letter then send it over for me to sign”

“Yes sir thank you sir”
