I have noticed that the average stats for AA matriculed at DO is: (Black/African-American: 3.32 | 3.14 | 22.31), which is somewhat low. I am having a dilemma as far I dont know whether or not I should apply with a low mcat score since I dont want to apply multiple times because I have seen people said on SDN that schools frown upon reapplicants. My situation is: I am an AA with a 3.15 cGPA, 3.28 sGPA and I have not taken the mcat yet, but my last practice test was 24 and I am taking the mcat in early July. My ECs, LORs, healthcare experience, shadowing etc.. are solid. I have decided that I will not apply with an mcat score < 25. Should I reconsider that decision? What minimum mcat score do you think would 'warrant' me to submit my application?

honestly, you have a month to really cram. Do just that. I assume you are AA and that is why you are asking. If you are looking to get in and don't have a specific school in mind, i would apply with a 23 or better (as an AA). that is me, shoot for the highest, but you may be ok.

You cannot be accepted unless you apply. Unless you're incredibly economically disadvantaged there's no reason not to apply this cycle. I know plenty of people in medical school who scored 23-25 on the MCAT and know others with < 20 who are continuing successfully onward.

Don't stress out about an MCAT score that you haven't got yet. STUDY!!!

Sincerely,

Accepted with a 25. Don't sweat it!

Just do the best you can man. As a fellow AA I myself have to do my best. Just do your best and apply when you feel ready.

I am not economically disadvantage. Money is not an issue. I am afraid to be a reapplicant if I dont get in this cycle because people on SDN said that adcoms dont like reapplicants.

Screw what people say on here. If everything said on here was taken as truth no one would be in med school.

I will go to any school even if it is in someone's backyard as long as that school is in the US.

I consider myself pretty informed on the entire application and acceptance process and I think people who say schools don't like re-applicants are full of it. Why else would they run post-bacc programs which are in large part filled due to people not being accepted the first go around?

Apply for medical school and get accepted. Period. Kill your practice MCATs, to the best of your ability, and go in confident. The more familiar and comfortable you are with the testing format and testing stamina the better off you will be.

Think of all those people who never even get on SDN... and think of how happy and less stressed they are. Don't worry!!

Hmm, I haven't seen this on SDN. But I completely agree, they're full of it.

I think the bold is extremely important. I wasn't test-ready or confident on my first try, and it showed. My second attempt was a lot better of an experience having prepared myself correctly, especially for testing stamina and overall test style.

Oh geez I think about this sometimes, but then I thank God that SDN exists because there is a wealth of knowledge on here. I don't see how anybody could get through college, medical school, residency, and fellowship without ever hearing about it. Is that even conceivable? 🙄

That's not true. There is no prejudice either for or against reapplicants. Some schools limit the number of times you can reapply. Every school wants to see improvements you've made. (For some useful hints, see: http://www.hsc.unt.edu/education/tcom/admissions/Reapplicants.cfm)

You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

That is kind of the point.

No one is arguing that schools say "he is a reapplicant, put him on the bottom cause he is diseased." but when a first time applicant applies and everything is cool, schools say "cool, interview him." but it is human nature that when they see a reapplicant and think "hm....I wonder why he didn't get in the first time." they also say "where did he improve?" if the scores are awesome and he should have received an interview or two they may think "is this guy a tool? Why didn't he get in?" it is just another hoop to jump through.

And I think people who deny that these questions pop into the mind of a human adcom member aren't human.

Exactly, I was a reapplicant... I got interview invites to schools that rejected me the cycle prior and accepted to a school that rejected me the prior cycle also.

Definitely do it. You have an entire month and that's a ton of time to improve your score especially if you can pin point your weaknesses. A month before my MCAT I felt nowhere near ready. I didn't finish all the content until 2.5 weeks before my test day and in that time I did FLs and reviewed stuff I was weak on. You can do it.

+1

If I matriculate I will definitely owe a lot to SDN. It made me into an MCAT studying machine and I've learned so much about the entire process here.

Yea, the only "disadvantage" to reapplying is the need to have made significant improvements in your application. Someone with a 3.5/30 and decent ECs might get in on their first try, but if you applied with a 3.45/30 and decent ECs, didn't get in, then reapplied with a 3.5/30 and decent ECs, you probably won't get in to the schools you are reapplying to because you did nothing to improve yourself.
