minimum scores for Harbor and UCIrvine?

Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping to apply to EM next fall--since my family lives somewhat near both of these schools (harbor and uc irvine) they are my first pick.

i'm hearing that cutoff scores for interviews at harbor are around a 230-240.
is that true?

I got a 231--normally i would think that's ok, but now i'm hearing that cutoff scores for interviews at harbor are around a 230-240. did anyone on this forum get an interview at harbor or uc irvine with a score of 230 or below? or if not you, do you know of someone else who did? just wondering if it's not worth fantasizing about.

It won't be your score that keeps you from getting an interview. Relax, apply, and hope for the best. And if you don't get either of those programs, don't worry about it. After interviewing at both (and 19 other places) I ended up not ranking Irvine and ranking Harbor 15th. They have good things about them, but bad things too. There are several other programs within 2 hours drive of your family, and another 6 or so within a 6-8 hour drive. And besides, its easy to get cheap tickets into LAX.

thanks desperado--yeah, i know they're a short flight away no matter where I end up. but my husband and i are hoping to have a baby by then (he's in med-school too)--so babies would be a lot more possible if i could have my mom nearby to baby-sit daily 😀

My main point is this...your 231 breaks the main number barrier out there (230.) So if you don't get an interview, it isn't your number. Besides, what would you do if I told you I knew for sure that Harbor used 235 as a cut-off. Would you not apply?

My impression of the residents at Harbor was that they were mostly single, fun-loving, club scene-going crowd...not exactly the married with children residency. But if that's where your hopes lie, good luck! Your performance on a rotation there will have a great deal more to do with whether you match or not than your Step I score...and will guarantee you an interview. So if those are really your dream jobs, rotate at both of them.

P.S. I knew a guy with a 249 who didn't get either interview, so maybe the cut-off is 250.

FWIW I scored below 230 and got interviews at Irvine, Harbor, USC, Davis (NoCal). I didnt really like harbor myself and I would agree with Desperado about them not being the married type. Anyways good luck!

Unless you have the meanest PD ever, you'll be able to do what most sane people do--take a leave of absence or year off (although I do know people who scheduled their vacation and elective time to coincide with their delivery in order to finish residency without any delays).... plus, if you reeeeaaaally don't want to hang out with your kid, I'm sure you'll find ways to get rid of them--one of my colleagues sends his 6 yo 2000 miles to hang out with his grandparents in Minnesota at least a couple times a year...

and, btw, that resident I mentioned who had her kid during residency highly recommends to all humanity to NOT have a kid during intern year.

Last yr.. IIRC I got them after the deans letter went out other than MLK which I got in early october.

Doing a sub-I at Harbor doesn't guarantee you an interview. If they don't like you as a sub-I then they won't interview you. That being said I would apply. You never know where you'll end up. And if you do decide to do a sub- I , then do well.

Unless it's changed, I think UC Davis guarantees that you won't get an interview... for them, the AI is the interview--their reasoning is that since they've worked with you for a month, they don't need to waste your/their time and money with an interview.

I interviewed at Harbor last year, and had a 212 on step 1. I improved 10 points on step 2.

As far as the West Coast programs, you should start to hear back from them any time now. The East and Midwest always tend to offer interviews earlier.

I wish more programs did this. An away is like a month long interview anyways. Not that I wouldnt want to go back if I had the time and the $$$, but the reality of how much the interview process is really going to cost is starting to kick in right about now.

FWIW - the EM residency director told us (first year UCI'ers) that you need at least the national mean to interview at UCI. I imagine that this is a general rule of thumb, and not a hard and fast rule. Good luck!

Depends on what they mean by "focused" I was offered interviews at both and I didnt hit 230 or anything close..
