Hello all, i wanted some advice as to what a good minor would be. As of now, im majoring in psychology. It would be ideal if i could minor in bio, but my school only allows one to major in it. I want a minor that would be able to blend well with the premed requirements (bio, chem, etc.) What do you think? any advice is appreciated. thanks!

Chemistry is a pretty easy minor to accomplish with the premed reqs you have to fulfill. However, I would suggest minoring in something outside of the sciences to diversify your education. That's just me though, and I am a little biased (Speech Communication and Political Science majors...).

Why don't you take a bio major? You'd probably have to take most of the courses anyways.

I love the comments on your mdapps profile

"Not going to Lie... im only commenting because your profile picture had a really cute chick on it. If thats you, then wow... I would love to date a girl like that!! OTherwise it lookslike you have a tough application going for you, stellar GPA Semi-above avg MCAT, I would say the sky is the limit for you pretty lady."

Someone tried to ask you out on your anonymous mdapps profile. That's pretty sweet..

Back on topic: Your minor doesn't have to be in a related field. All that matters is that you do well and complete the classes required for med school.

definitely minor in something that interests you. i dont think that any kind of science minor is going to make you a much better candidate so its all about what you want

You don't have to declare a minor do you? If they won't officially let you minor in Bio you could always just take the classes you want anyway. (assuming the classes aren't restricted to Bio majors only - which could easily be looked up online)

I think majoring in Bio would really make me blend in with a majority of other premeds. Everyone says it's best if you take things that are not so typical; this is why im majoring in psych (even though this is still kind of popular).

I know it doesn't have to be in a related field, but i was trying to minor in something that would knock out most of the premed requirements like bio and chem. I honestly dont want to minor in something like Econ. and end up taking my Gen Ed requirements, major requirements, minor requirements, AND premed requirements on top of it all. My goal is to try and knock out as many premed classes as possible through a minor (since my school requires a minor)

You shouldn't avoid choosing something just because it is popular. Do what interests you. I guess if you don't want to do "bio", how about physiology/biochemistry/neuroscience/immunology/pathology?

Definitely choose a major that interests you, regardless of its popularity among premeds. Think of it this way: the prereqs you have to take will most likely fill your core classes (if you're at a liberal arts college), so you won't just be taking "extra" classes because they will still be part of whatever degree you decide to pursue. If you plan your schedule wisely, you won't have to take a single course in excess, they will all fulfill the requirements your schools sets forth anyway. Now, if you do decide to continue in a science direction, those prereqs will still fulfill your core, but they will also be gateway classes, allowing you to continue on to upper level science courses. Does this all make sense? It might not even apply to your school though.

What about a double minor? I know that I'm getting a minor in Chemistry because of the premed reqs but I found out that all I need is one more class (Ecology) to get a minor in Biology. This coming semester is the only time I'll have the space to include Ecology - but I'll be taking it with a bunch of relatively hard classes (BioChem, Molecular Genetics) and an Independent Study with my lab (19 credits total) on top of an MCAT class.

Taking this much might affect the time I'll be able to dedicate to the Independent Study as well as how I do in my other classes. But I've taken 19 credits before and did pretty well.

Do you guys think it's all worth it? Is a double minor worth it?

Same thing happened to me. I just needed 1 more class to finish off my Business minor. But what I did is I took the one class during the summer. I dont know what your situation is on summer school, but my school offers summer school or you can just take it where you live.. But I think it looks good, and its only 1 more class. 19 doesn't sound bad..

I have chosen a major that interests me: psychology. The prereqs i have to take aren't going to fulfull my core classes at the liberal arts college im going to because i just transferred in from a community college where all of my classes are i took there are going to fulfull the core gen ed requirements.

Because they overlap so much, I don't think it will "impress" people. If you are interested in taking ecology, then go for it! You still get the same degree regardless of having the extra minor, right? (and if your school requires something like a major and two minors for graduation, then they only count them if they are not overlapping)

false. at least at my undergrad.

When i think of a typical premed major, bio and chem first come to mind. I suppose i could have described a psych. major for premeds as being "sub-typical". Nevertheless, I intend to major in psych and choose the most efficient premed minor which im still contemplating. Perhaps Chem?
