I hope this is a questions that will not be offensive to others but I am wondering if their schools that are wholeheartly looking to have a student population that is truly ethnically diverse?

Hopefully pharmacy schools want to accept students on the basis of academic merit, not skin color.

I don't know what your ethnicity is, but at my school, caucasians are the minority.

Any school that complies to affirmative action. 🙂

I guess what I am saying it is difficult to go to a school and a community where I am the only Hispanic person. I figure someone ight of thought I wanted to schools where they perferred minorities. But that is not what I tried to say. I didn't want to have to explain but I guess when it is this type of question it seems loaded Anytime someone brings up the "minority" issue, its automatically assumed it means where a person of color can have an advantage.

And by the way, I have spoken to a pharmacy admissions counselor who said she left her position because she felt that her efforts were fruitless. She said she recruitted (between 50/100) top notch ethnically diverse students (with top academic and PCAT score)but only 2 people of color (i.e African-American or Hispanic) out of over 150 candidates were selected (the community around the school is ehtnically diverse) . Her opinion was the school did not diversity but the same type of person (i.e. not diverse). I don't want to go to a school like this one. Instead, I wish to find a school where it is truly making efforts to be diverse.

No Asian? 😱

Exactly my point.

Most california schools are 60% Vietnamese so if you are Vietnamese you are out of luck. Maybe if you were a tall black man.

60% Vietnamese, huh? Are you just pulling that figure out of thin air or what?

And to the OP, at least in California pharmacy schools diversity is somewhat lacking and the large majority of the students are asian or caucasian. I think the best way to figure out which schools are making an honest push is to do what you did and talk to admissions coordinators (and assistants and other people that work with the coordinator) to assess for yourself how dedicated they are about creating a diverse class.

It may not be perfect, but UCSF strives to bring about a diverse student population. In my class of 122, here is the ethnic breakdown
49.18% Asian
19.67% Caucasian
12.30% Underrepresented minorities (including African American, Chicano / Latino, Filipino, Pacific Islander, American Indian)
03.28% Other
15.57% Unknown

Mainly asian, but that includes, vietnamese, chinese, japanese, korean, internationl students from asia, etc...

How many blacks or hispanics even apply to pharmacy school? I bet the acceptance to application ratio of blacks and hispanics is pretty high compared to whites and asians. It's not the fault of the pharmacy schools if blacks and hispanics do not apply. You can't force a career on minorities just to promote diversity. And do various skin colors real make a group of students diverse? I think real diversity would be in itraits like political idealogy, personality, finanicial background (poor, middle class, rich). Using skin color to measure diverse seems very superficial to me. All groups of people are diverse because every person is unique. As a pharmacist in the real world, you are going to have to work with white people, there isn't going to be a minority working at every pharmacy in the country.

I believe the question is more of, why do minorities not apply? Is it because they naturally would not like to have a nice $100,000 dollar a year job to raise a family?
Or is it because there are no minority pharmacist role models, no support system, hegemony etc. Education in our country seriously is a sham, and I believe based mainly on access and wealth.

The question of what exactly is diversity is a good one. Of course diversity in thought, social economics, etc. are highly valued. This question examines the difference between for example an African immigrant versus an African American. Two very different groups, not to be judged just by their token skin color.

Then there is the question of the necessity for diversity, or specifically skin color diversity. If you don't believe in it, well, I'm not sure what to say other than read up on this some more.

Also I forgot to mention SNPHA and its mother organizaiton NPHA

First you have completly missed the point. It is diverse cultures that I am referring. If one knows anything about the Hispanic culture we come in every shade, belief and origin (e.g. Chinese-Mexican). Further it is not true that proportionately, more people of color are accepted compared to other groups. There are qualified like any other. But you know what ithis is a waste of time. Everyone has an opinion. I can go on and on but whats the point? I can tell you I know first hand people who became medical students all because someone was willing to give them a chance (no other school would even give them the time of day) One is a doctor and the other is finishing med school.

My original question was, is there a school where there is true diversity not where there is more of one kind of person over the other. I refuse nor will I attempt to apologize or defend who I am. I just hope I find a place where it is truly diverse and where I can contibute to it.

The answer is a simple NO! There will never be a school that will be composed of the following student population:

20% Asian
20% Caucasian
20% African American
20% Mexican
20% Other

However, if by a miracle if it does occur, CA pharm schools are the only ones that has a slight chance of this occurring. And if it does, the Mexican student population would be mostly come from illegal parents. Sorry, I have to be straight about this because this is true!!!

It is unfortunate that there people like yourself around. Please GOD don't let people like this idiot get into Pharmacy school. And for your information I am not one of those so called illegal (3rd generation Latino-American) who is proud to say I still have many cutural values of my heritage. Thank the lord one of those traits is not ignorance! You like many others react rather then think.

Check out this link http://www.ceousa.org/pdfs/VAS Report.pdf It's a study of affirmative action in college admissions for a few colleges. I wouldn't be surprised if many pharmacy colleges place an unfair emphasis like this on race rather than academic merit. I also want to point out that when I was in high school, there was only 1 or 2 blacks in the advance science classes. This is not to say that all of these black students were stupid, but in general it seems that blacks don't try as hard as whites and asians in school. I think part of this is due to the fact that black leaders like Jesse Jackson and AL sharpton promote the notion that blacks cannot succeed in America because whites are all racists and want to hold them down - as a result many blacks don't see the point in trying. My point is, if blacks and hispanics are not excelling in high school, that probably means most of them are not going to go to college, especially to do a challenging program like pharmacy. So to think that there is some kind of racist conspiracy to keep minorities out of pharmacy school seems absurd to me.

Your off in space! Who said there was a conspiracy? I think you need to take a chill pill with this racist crap! You are so blind I won't waste time debating this issue

earlier you said this "She said she recruitted (between 50/100) top notch ethnically diverse students (with top academic and PCAT score)but only 2 people of color (i.e African-American or Hispanic) out of over 150 candidates were selected"

That sounds like a racist conspiracy theory to me. I would highly doubt that only 2 blacks or hispanics were accepted if they had high grades and PCAT scores. Colleges dont' want to be accused of racism in admissions, and they LOVE to accept qualified minorities. Don't believe everything somebody tells you unless they can back it up with something. The notion that a college only accepted 2 out of 150 plus qualified minoritites just doesn't sound true. You need to be less emotional, I am just trying to have a reasonable discussion with you.

by the way, there is a historically black college that has a pharmacy program in Virginia. I think it's Hampton. Probably not that many white people there though, so it might not be diverse enough for you 🙂

No comment at all. Silence is the best answer

I love it when people imply I'm a racist because I point out that admissions should be based on merit, not race. That's very mature. College students are so hellbent on being poiltically correct these days that we can never have a reasonable discussion on anything.

I'm not implying anything. I just think "some" of your comments are bordering on stupid.

what was stupid about them? Can you elaborate?

Why ICA? Are you or your parents an illegal immigrant from Mexico? By the way, I didn't post that, Dr. X did. I don't think he meant to offend anybody.

ICA,

I would like to apologize for that one comment I made. It was uncalled for. However, at the rate illegals (primarily from Mexico) are coming to CA, soon or later, this comment will come true.

I am currently going to X Pharm School, so word to the OP, know the facts before spilling sh^t on the forum. I am already in Pharm School and doing extremely well!!! Also another thing, 3rd generation doesn't mean anything. It could mean that your family reproduced quickly and have child after child. Assuming if my math is correct, 3 generations could occur as fast as 36 years (12 years x 3).

It is amazing how mess up our admissions policy is in the States.

I agree with Bob_Barker27, he is telling the facts, he's not a racist!

I should have written more than what I did so that I didn't come across sounding blunt. I love the people in my classes. I'm excited to be around different cultures where everyone talks openly. I do have to admit that on my first day I felt very out-of-place, but I stuck with the material and now I don't feel any kind of barriers due to skin color.

I don't know what a "differeny language" is, but if other people are talking about me in their native language, more power to them! I'm not threatened by what other people might be saying about me. I have way too strong of a character to allow that to happen.

Have a pleasant evening, sir.

Actually, no. I am not Mexican, Mexican-American or even of Hispanic origin. I just think it's a shame that there are still people out there that stereotype and make generalizations of a whole culture or race due to their own ignorance. 🙁

Perhaps I am making a mistake by posting on this topic, but here I am, drawn in...

I will be attending a pharmacy school where, as a caucasian, I will be a minority. This does not bother me or make me feel uncomfortable. I want to be with other pharmacy students who were chosen based on merit (academic and other). I hope that the other students in my class will be open-minded and will exhibit self-control in both academic and professional settings.

It would be best if there were no further posts to this thread.

Why?

You posted...

Did somebody say that all Mexicans were illegal immigrants? There isn't a reason to get all melodramatic and self righteous. Take the time to actually read what people post in here.

Jalba22, you said it best... Most Mexican students would come from illegal parents?? Ignorance must be heritable because you're not the only person I've heard that from. But for me to be silent and let you make a comment like that would be wrong. I hate to tell you, but a good portion of the Southwest was OWNED and INHABITED by mexico. The latino/hispanic population isn't being "generated" by some flux in illegal immigration. My parents, grandparents, great great great grandparents, are more "legal" than yours I'll bet. What the [edited] is up with the notion that we're all "illegal"?? If my grandma heard you say that and could, she'd reach out through this computer and slap your face--perhaps a rightous gift from Jesus we "illegals" call humility. 😱 And i'm just being "straight with you" because this is true!

So brighten up, and educate your ignorance.

So now mexicans are child molesters? I agree hispanics/latinos have children at earlier ages than the usual compulsive "plan-to-the-T" Americans (who, if you have children like myself, know is impossible and mere paranoia). But consitently at the age of 12? Come on now, wise up. 🙄

I'll tell you what. Cut your ignorant ways now and your whole life and everyone around you will be better for it. 👍

My entering class of 58 students in St. Pete had:

1 - black
1 - middle eastern
1 - india/pakistan
1 - hispanic
7 - asian
47 - white

UF doesn't have a spot for race on their application. I don't know the breakdown on other campuses.
