Dear SDN,
I am well aware that there are quite a few threads on this but I have a variation in mine. I am half Puerto Rican and half German ( I know its a nationality and not a race) and I was born in Germany (speak German fluently). I usually identify with Caucasian but I was curious if being born in Germany and half Puerto Rican would grant me an advantage of sorts?

You can claim URM hispanic....it is an advantage. And while many here don't think it shouldn't exist, don't let anyone tell you they wouldn't claim it in a heartbeat. This is a forum with a "would you eat a poop hot dog for an acceptance" thread

Good luck with the application season!

Haha very true. So how do I go about proving that I am Puerto Rican? If its an advantage then anybody would be able to claim being a minority

Sorry brother, I'm not sure about that. I would just mark whatever is true and cross that bridge when you get to it

I appreciate all your help 🙂 Lastly, would it come across as sketch if I claim half Hispanic and I get an interview and I very obviously do not appear Puerto Rican?

You're as much a minority as the first black president of the USA.

I highly doubt it. As a half Puerto Rican myself, most people understand that one can look different from the mold and still identify as half Hispanic. You're half Hispanic, so claim it; it's the truth so it's not sketch.

You can identify as hispanic if you want, but if you look like the average white guy and lived your life pretty much cushy, if I were an adcom, I wouldn't be impressed by you. Maybe if you had done some relevant community work. That's just me.
