Did any of you guys apply to Oregon/Washington programs?

Only heard from 8 out of 20. No word from anyone since my last post. I'd feel way more comfortable with more interview offers.

I'm sure that you will hear from more - the interview deadline is not until March 18th. At least that's what I keep telling myself!

Just looking at last years thread a ton of interviews were offered in late February.

I wouldn't sweat it too hard. These things always seem to work out somehow.

2/20
I've been offered interviews at:
Our lady of the lake
Saint Luke's
North well
Bay state
Summa
UF Jacksonville
Wayne state
Swedish
UT Houston
Carolinas

Hpb fellowships offers:
Duke
Virginia mason
U of Oregon

Rejections (if I can remember them all):
Tampa
Wake forest
Cornell
Portland Oregon
U of NE
Probably more but can't remember

I applied very broadly. I'm a DO from a new program. My absite scores aren't great, have gotten better recently. Did some research and authoring 2 papers with two presentations.
Just finished my first two interviews, lady of the lake and Saint Luke's.
Scheduling interviews is a nightmare, having to use all my vacation. Any know anyone who matched who can offer some insight? Seems like everybody who applied has a lot of interviews.

Njsurgres,

a guy from my program matched MIS last year and he was on a visa. He applied fairly broadly as well. He didnt have much to say other than he thought it was a really relaxed process and he matched at a place he thought fit him very well (even though it wasnt his top choice). I think the total number of applicants to MIS programs is pretty small to be honest with you so that may explain the high number of interviews for people. I think thats a good thing though in that we have the opportunity to really find a program where we can foster our own professional and personal goals. Ive had one interview so far and it was super laid back.

Thanks seed. My two interviews were very laid back as well

I fly American everywhere I go. I have platinum status because I like to save all of my money for cool vacations. So I would say that overall American is best for me, but that is just for now. We'll see!

Oh and rejection from Stanford! :(

No idea how many people applied but heres my highly flawed rudimentary math to a reasonable guess...

141 total programs on fellowship council site
Guessing about 1/4 - 1/3 take 2 applicants
This means approximately 176-186 total spots available...

Lets assume only 90% of the spots fill... that leaves between 158-167 spots that WILL be matched.

Now... last years match rate was 63% for all comers according to a pdf file that i read from fellowship council.

so if 158-167 represents 63% of applicants then that means there are between 250 and 265 total applicants to MIS/Bariatrics

I have no idea how many total surgical residents there are and 250-265 seems awfully high... that being said this is including foreign grads and those that are out of residency and in practice so theres that to think about.

Math was never my strong suit so forgive me if the above isnt exactly clear.

Fwiw I had a 3 hour layover that I was on when I did this math do I'm only mostly a nerd with way too much time on my hands.

I'll go a flawed analysis of my own. VCU had three interview dates for one position and invited 60 candidates to interview. Thats a lot of people to interview for one spot. I suspect they invited virtually everyone who applied except maybe the last 2SD. So they had say 70 applicants. Assuming people apply to 30 programs on average, one in four applicants applied to VCU. Which means there are probably 70 x 4 = 280 applicants in the pool.
So I would guess that with reasonable confidence, there are between 250 and 310 applicant in the pool for an MIS fellowship spot. Thats like a match rate of 55-60%. Which makes MIS/bariatrics probably one of the most competitive fellowships out there! Is that good or bad? I don't know.

Yeah I got the Hopkins one too but it conflicts with one of my other ones unfortunately... Ugh.

Irvine is only offering one day, Hopkins the same date...

Being a travel agent is not so fun

also heard from Brigham & Women's Hospital yesterday

Heard from Westchester today... How many are left that haven't sent invites yet?

Vandy and wash U St. Louis sent rejections.

Anyone heard from OHSU?

got rejections today from Emory and OHSU.

Yeah got my OHSU rejection too. No worries. I've got some faculty members who spent time up there so they were asking.

Wow as in permanently? Happy St Patrick's day from Boston btw!

Not sure about UM, but just got the confirming email today. Happy St Pattys! Leaving Boston now :(

Didn't apply to GW but have heard good things.

In other news, I've enjoyed trying out the local breweries while I'm traveling to all these places. Sacramento has some damn good beer selections.

Wait. U of Miami is no longer in match?? I have an interview scheduled there, never got an email. Are you guys sure? When did you guys get this email?

I got this email last week from the fellowship council....

Dear Dr. Nysurg,

The Fellowship Council would like to inform you that the Bariatric Fellowship Program at University of Miami Hospital has been removed from the application and matching process. This program will be removed from your confirmation list and will not count towards your paid programs.

If you have any questions regarding this, please contact the Fellowship Council office at [email protected] or (310) 437-0555, ext 125.

Regards,

The Fellowship Council

Any general impressions along the way that anyone has? I'm 18 interviews in, 8 more to go.

Oh man 18???? That's gotta be brutal. PM me if you want I've got a few that I've been to with big red flags. I know there are some PD's that cruise these boards so won't say it out in public. For the most part though I've been really happy with the programs I've seen.
