Misdemeanor DV

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If it's a truly heinous offense it won't get dropped even if the person has no prior convictions. And while what you're saying could happen I still believe it isn't fair for people who didn't commit any actual crime. Also I feel that if someone gets off lucky they'll slip up again in the future and get kicked out anyways
It doesn't have to be a heinous offense to be something that should exclude someone from becoming a physician. As for the "slip up" part, it seems like a very poor system to cross your fingers and hope that any students you admit who got off lucky will do something illegal again in the future - inefficient, problematic for the profession as a whole, and a huge liability.

I'm not saying the current system is perfect, just that schools covering their eyes and pretending that a lack of a conviction record means an applicant is totally above-board is not a better system.

The police arrest him for violence against his domestic partner and she's the crazy one?

If some chick lashes out at my face, I push her away from me, and she calls the police, shes crazy. She's trying to get the case dropped, but in CA they have to arrest and charge if the police is called. Or did you not read the entire post and you're white knighting?????

Applicants might have the opportunity to explain themselves, but be honest. What percentage of adcoms would reject without caring about an explanation?

EDIT:
1) Life is not fair.
2) There is no right to go to medical school.
3) There have been people with felony CONVICTIONS who ended up in med school.

If it helps I had a friend who got arrested for felony drug possesion (Adderall) and a year later he got into pharmacy school.

That's a new level of irony.

I'm not kidding on that one. I don't know if he was in the process of applying when it happened, I just know he was wanting to go to pharmacy school and then my wife showed me his mug shot. He started pharmacy school last year. My guess is that charges were dropped because I can't see a pharmacy school accepting a student that was arrested for a controlled substance since you know... a pharmacist has access to all kinds of controlled substances.

Yeah, that's why it's ironic! Imagine if a serial murderer became a doctor....

In all seriousness I'm very glad it worked out for your friend!

Can't OP and his girlfriend come out and say it was just kinky sex? She was the naughty school girl and he was the teacher enforcing discipline?

c'mon bro.

If a couple is enjoying kinky sex, they aren't calling 911 to report an emergency.
Don't let this backfire and see her charged with "filing a false report" if she really was hit or pushed or slapped.

Well you see, when two people love each other very much...

I mean how the **** do you play off DV as kinky sex? Why would you even make such an absurd comment during a serious discussion about a DV charge?

In the most plausible scenario, assuming neither OP or his [ex?] girlfriend are borderline sociopaths, they had a heated argument and one or both of them has a tendency to get physical when extremely upset. Maybe she didn't mean to "accidentally scratch him on the face" but, uh, how exactly did it happen if she wasn't 'sorta swinging for him or jabbing a finger in his face? I'm known to talk with my hands sometimes, but I don't yell with them, and I'd never get close enough to accidentally hurt someone during an argument...

What I'm sayin' OP is that you both need to change your ways. You can escalate an argument or diffuse one. She can escalate or she can diffuse. Both of you can walk away. Both of you can apologize.

Change your ways. Change your partner. (edit to clarify - I mean "replace" not "modify") Learn from this and avoid future problems...

Agreed other than "change your partner." This doesn't sound like a dangerous kind of violence on either end (yet), but I think walking away from the whole situation usually comes before trying to change someone else.

The only good advice of "Get a lawyer yesterday" has already been spoken. The OP asked for advice, not an analysis of his life/relationship. Can this thread be closed already?

Hey I'm trying to help. Guess you've never had fun in the sack? You should try it sometime. Crankiness might go away.

Sometimes it gets out of hand or accidents happen.
