It doesn't have to be a heinous offense to be something that should exclude someone from becoming a physician. As for the "slip up" part, it seems like a very poor system to cross your fingers and hope that any students you admit who got off lucky will do something illegal again in the future - inefficient, problematic for the profession as a whole, and a huge liability.If it's a truly heinous offense it won't get dropped even if the person has no prior convictions. And while what you're saying could happen I still believe it isn't fair for people who didn't commit any actual crime. Also I feel that if someone gets off lucky they'll slip up again in the future and get kicked out anyways
I'm not saying the current system is perfect, just that schools covering their eyes and pretending that a lack of a conviction record means an applicant is totally above-board is not a better system.
