18 schools left to hear from

oh thank god. with all this talk about how many interviews they've already sent out I was thinking only 18 spots left lol

18?!? Holy crap that must have cost a fortune.

Shotgun approach, i see 😉

Actually I applied to 21, but I have heard from glasgow and ross, and apparently I didn't hear from Mizzou, so thats 18 remaining. Yea, shotgun. I really really want to get in, haha, but my frist choices are Cornell (IS), Tufts or abroad.

What is your reasoning for going abroad vs. any other state schools that you could get into? I'm not against abroad, i just think it would be more complicated than going to another state school and Id rather reduce the amt of stress during the new life change lol

I know this isn't directed toward me, but I would consider choosing an abroad school over an OOS school. I studied abroad in Scotland, and absolutely loved it. Sure, there is some extra stress involved, but for some people (not everyone), that's the fun of it.

Yea I could agree with that. I guess also, since I travel overseas a lot it wouldn't bring the same "WOW" factor in for me as much as someone who doesn't have the opportunity to travel all the time. I also think my bf would kill me if I went that far away lol But if I dont get in this year, i'll have to consider it!!

I just got an e-mail (cause I e-mailed them) saying that if Mizz is going to send out additional interview invitations it will be the first week of december. For now they're waiting for the people they've already invited to respond. So if your in the same boat as me waiting to hear from them at least you can be "worry free" for the next two weeks. Thankfully Mizz is my last choice so even though I'm slightly offended I didnt get an invite, my hopes and dreams are on my IS school anyway. 😎

So basically if you didn't get an interview this round, your only hope is that enough people reject their interview offers (not likely to happen this early) and they re-send them out?

Yeah, I don't know how, but my post earlier wasn't carried over when the next person copied/pasted.

So in other topics, I read the Missouri brochure--very cool and colorful, but I wish the stats info was up to date. The schedule looks interesting though. It looks almost like block scheduling with ~ 10 credits at a time with 4 -5 periods a year. I am not familiar with the quarter system, but I don't really think that this is it. Can a Missouri student tell us more about this?

Also, I scheduled my interview for a Sunday. Are there normally students there, will there be students there specifically for tours, questions, ect, or will it just be faculty and staff involved in the applications or interviews? I think I need to stop stressing over this already!

edited for clarity!

I'm actually not sure what you call the system we're on, to be honest. We have 11 instructional periods that make up our first two years of lecture courses, and the final 2 years are spent doing rotations of various sorts in clinics. The first year of lecture contains 5 instructional periods, and the second year of lecture contains 6. I think you can view the academic calendar and see where each of the instructional periods begins and ends for this current year if you're interested in that, as well.

On Sunday, you won't find too many students on campus SOLELY to be on campus, especially not the week after we get back from winter break lol. However, you will have MANY students on campus during the interview period to greet you, talk to you before your interview to help you relax or answer any questions you have, take you on a tour of the school if you like, and even eat lunch with you. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that you won't be able to get away from us LOL. There will always be a current student in reach for you to interact with while you're on the campus. Plus, at the end of your lunch, they hold a panel where the current vet students stand at the front of the room and answer any questions that anyone has at that time, which is nice if you're a little shy about approaching new people because many of you will have the same questions and you can get some of them answered without asking yourself (although I recommend that you do--we don't bite!). It's not unheard of for the current vet students to go out with some of the interviewees while they're in the area, as well, although I don't know if anyone is planning on that this year.

Edit: I meant to add that our credits are a bit more than your estimate lol. Physiology is 6 credits, anatomy is 3 credits, microanatomy is 2 or 3 credits, and cell biology is 3 credits, I believe. Those are all the courses we're taking now, and they all last through instructional periods 1 and 2, but we'll get new classes and continue some of the old ones when we begin instructional period 3 in January. Right now, though, we're at 14-15 credits, I think.

well i called them and there is no check in time.. lunch is from 1130-1230 but its optional, there will be students there to discuss stuff with so the person i spoke to said it was a good idea to attend. tours leave a couple times an hour apparently and you can catch it before your interview or after depending on if you want to get there early and such. the lady i talked to made it seem very laid back so hopefully its not too stressful 🙂

Did they say where lunch was? I have never visited the campus before. I think i will call to get the details because I am flying in from the east coast.

hum good question, i am assuming it will be at the vet school? i havent been to missouri either, the campus or the state! i suppose i will drive around until i find it yay 🙂

anyone else out there from michigan?

Any OOS'ers know their plans for flying in/getting to campus? It seems like there are far more flights going into St. Louis rather than Columbia. My issue is that i'm only 21, and i'm pretty sure you have to be like 25 to rent a car. Anyone have experience with getting from St. Louis to Columbia?

I'm flying in to stl because flying into small airports always backfires for me. I'm old though so the car rental is no biggie for me. You can still rent, it just costs more. I think there is also a shuttle, so might be something to look into.

I was actually wondering the same thing about car rentals. I'm 22... Flew in FL a few months ago, tried to rent a car, and was told "No way." I've never been in an accident (knock wood!), gotten a speeding ticket or anything, but they didn't even look at that.

I was stuck at the airport for 3 hours waiting for my uncle to get there, "rent a car" for himself, and then the two of us had to drive back. I was not impressed!

So yeah, now I'm a little concerned about the next few months...and how it's all going to happen.

Ok, I didn't get an interview to Mizzou, but did anyone else get an email about applying for the MPH/DVM dual program? And what does getting this email mean?

i got this email too. strange. very strange. i am confused!!! 😕 any present students at MO know what this is? sounds like an advertisement to their program but why would they send it out to people who have already applied?

I opened it and said "THIS is not what I was loooking for!" haha atleast I know they have the right email. 😉

That email about the dual degree was like a nasty trick. I opened it and was like "Yay- an interview......or not!!!" 😱

Crap I didn't even get that e-mail.

So it either means something, or they don't have my e-mail right/it's being blocked. Guess I get to call them tomorrow about my e-mail address...Yahoo is starting to annoy me. It blocked out my OSU e-mails too.

Edit: Yup just checked, e-mail address was wrong. Thankfully they have it so you can update it yourself but I wonder (hope) if maybe I missed an interview invite? Guess I still have to call them tomorrow.

Concerning how our blocks are arranged, ours is called 2 + 2, meaning that while the summers are only 6 weeks long, you enter clinical rotations October of third year (have I really been at this a little over a month? Seems like forever!) instead of middle of spring semester third year or later like most schools. So you basically get 6ish months more hard clinical experience AND more time for free blocks (you are required to do 12 weeks worth of rotations, but you also do externships/preceptorships/vacations during free blocks as well). During first and second year, you usually take ~4ish classes at a time, give or take. The scheduling is different now with the larger first year class (the 2013ers can answer that better than I can), but yeah.

I usually go to the OOS luncheon if I'm able (maybe they'll let me off clinic duty?), so I hope to see you all there. I am sorta technically an ambassador, but I usually only do this kind of stuff, not tours so much. If anyone wants to go sight seeing, I'll be glad to show anyone the town high lights.

If you are flying in, I'd use StL or KC (StL airport is slightly closer) instead of Columbia airport. You can use the MO-X airport shuttle service if you like.

You can also rent a car if you're 21, but they only let you rent just basic sedans, which should get you around fine. I think once you're like 26 or 27, you can rent the fancy stuff. 😀

I'm not in the DVM/MPH program, but it's pretty sweet if you like public health.

If I recall correctly, they emailed an itinerary to us last year in the actual interview invite. Have you scrolled all the way down to the bottom of yours? If it's not there, then you can contact Kathy Seay to either get one or get a general idea of what should happen. If you want an idea about it, though, I think we broke for lunch at 11:30 and it lasted until 1 or 1:30, and then interviews resumed for the rest of the afternoon. Tours left whenever people asked to go on them, however, so there's no real timeline that I know of outside of the interviews and lunch.

Last year, the lunch was in Adam's Conference Center, a room in the main building on campus. You won't have any trouble finding it, as there will be vet students and staff ready to show you the way whenever you need to be there. 🙂

Heart pounding when on my phone I see Dear Missouri DVM applicant....I seized up while I opened it only to find a informational email. JERKS! THat was cruel...😀

Just called them, I didn't miss anything. I know she didn't intend it this way but I had asked: "My e-mail was wrong so I was just checking to see if I missed anything", *hold*, she comes back "Yes! *elation* you haven't missed anything *damn!*"

Ah well. She said that the interview invite round has gone out and they'll send more on December 1stish dependent on if they feel they need to (IE if enough people decline their invites).

I just checked the interview scheduling page again and there are 19 spots left. I am also pretty sure (don't take my word on this) that they added 2-4 slots per day. Hope some of you guys get interviews!

:luck:

Sorry if this has been asked already, but how many rounds and how many interviews per round? (Or how many interviews total?)

well i have no idea how many rounds they plan on having. but i can tell you that there are 183 interview spots taken so far on the website out of a possible 200 spots. i am OOS and it seems that the 183 spots taken so far are also OOS interviews.

I'm shocked at how quick their whole process is....Weren't the supps due Nov 1?

They must only look at the supps of their "top candidates" based on VMCAS or something like that... No way they looked at everything for all the applications in under 3 weeks...

If that's the case, why don't they just do "invitational supplements" like Michigan??? Saves the rest of us some time and money.

1 down 6 to go. 🙁

You said it right there. Money. Most schools probs don't look at all the supplementals, but it is hell of a way to make a ton of extra money.

Did anyone else get an e-mail about application deficiencies?

Mine said my only deficiency was my fall 2009 transcript... and that I need to send it in by Feb. 1st.

I mean, thanks for the reminder, but since I can't possibly send it out yet, please don't freak me out like that!
