Missouri Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yikes, I wasn't expecting this so soon. 👎 I'm half afraid to check the mailbox on Monday.

Any idea how waitlisting works at Mizzou?

I am not sure why Mizzou would waste the paper and postage to send us a rejection. I would rather have it in email so I can just click delete. I have yet to receive one, but I do not doubt that it will be here Monday/Tuesday since I have not had an interview invite either. Very disappointing, they seem like a great school with an awesome program. Good luck to everyone interviewing!!!

mizzou does everything by snail mail for whatever reason. last year the wait list scenario was awful cuz they added about 40 extra seats to their class and didn't know who to give them to (i.e. give preference to ISers or make more money and take more OOSers)...they chose the latter...after about a month of waiting. needless to say, finding out in may that i didn't get in and then trying to register for classes in order to graduate was AWESOME

WHat is missouri known for? I know they have good programs for large animal and would like to increase the number of LA vets in the midwest area. Besides that, what are people looking forward to about the missouri program?

I personally like their interest in advancing the "One Health" initiative and increasing interaction with med students.

Mizzou seems (to me) to give a strong foundation in not only large animal, but small as well. I want to go into mixed animal medicine, so it's important to me that both areas be strong.
Mizzou also has two years of rotations/internships/etc instead of just one year, so it seems like the students get a lot more hands on experience than at other schools.

Those are two of the main things I like about the school, anyway.

As suspected, I just got my rejection letter.

1 down, 7 to go.

REEEEEEEEEEEJECCCCCCCCCTED via mail today.

Starting finals week off with a rejection. This isn't gonna be a good week... lol

I just sent them an update email this morning with next semesters final course schedule... they must have just hit delete! lol

I'll be checking the dreaded mailbox at 6pm today. =(

Boo 👎 rejected via snailmail

It's pretty short.

Dear X:

This letter is to inform you that the Committee on Admissions and Scholarship did not include you among those invited for an interview. For the class of 2014 your application will receive no further review.

Thank you for your interest in the University of Missouri.

Wow that is a sucky way to put it. I still believe in everyone who didn't get an invite!! I hope you all applied to other places. I'm sure you'll make it! Good luck!!

I actually think its the crappiest rejection letter I've ever recieved.... no "we hope you'll consider reapplying", no "we appreciate the time you've put in", nada.

Seriously?
I seem to remember my rejection letters from last year being quite well thought out compared to this one.

Oh well....

My letter was sent to my parents house so they opened it for me. They just told me it was a rejection but later my parents were saying how poorly written it was and how it didn't even thank me for applying. Of course, I didn't ask for it to read it myself haha but i guess i agree with it being crappy!

I think all us bitter rejects will have to move to another forum...we are gonna bring down the interviewers. Congrats guys and BAHHHH HUMBUG.

haha i have to agree that it really was cut-to-the-chase. I would've expected at least a little "thanks for your effort and good luck with future endeavors" or something especially since they even wasted the postage on it. o well, it was my first rejection and it did sting. good luck to all! we just have to keep our heads up, right? 🙂

We should make a thread for 1) people who get rejections and 2) people who have yet to hear a damn thing.

I'm officially in the club. MizzoU rejection letter found today.

Yup me too. Now should I throw it away or burn it? I knew I shouldn't have applied here. Poop.

Hmmm...sorry to hear that letter was so short and erm...direct? I do know one of the main administrative office workers is out on maternity leave, so it's probably chaotic over in the dean's office at the moment!

So far I've kept all my rejection letters. My sister wants to make me a scrap book of my vet school years and I think it'd be an awesome parallel: 10 pages of rejection letters then the one acceptance letter at the end lol.

Haha.. I've imagined hanging up my rejection letters and then my acceptance on the wall in my house. Just need the acceptance now! 😉

Does anyone know if Missouri allows you to get in state tuition after 1 year residency like Ohio state?

Yes, and thankfully so! All you need to do is get a Missouri driver's license and license plate, register to vote, make $2,000 of taxable income, and not leave the state for more than 2 weeks in the first year (I think this only counts for the summer, however, so you'd be fine for holidays and the like).

Do most OOS students earn the money during the summer before/after the first year, or does it have to be by April? Do most students who do this get jobs at the vet school? This is a big plus for me for Missouri, but I want to be sure I understand the system. Thanks!

🙂

You out of state kids are so lucky that you already know one or the other. Mizzou is my in state and my app won't be looked at until Feb! The wait is killing me. Everything is in except for my fall transcripts and it's just a very long waiting game now. I only applied there since I don't want to pay out of state tuition plus I LOVE their program and the type of vet they turn out. I'm so jealous of all my friends that already know if they have interviews at out of state schools!

It varies a lot, actually. You don't have to have the money until August of the year after you move, and the vet school offers us jobs in various departments to both help out with this and to ensure that we aren't working too many hours on top of our vet school duties. Because I like that perk, knowing that they understand the rigors of our schedule, I picked up a job with the veterinary teaching hospital in October. Additionally, some people had jobs with the school or outside sources before school even began, and I also know numerous out of state-ers who aren't planning to even TRY getting a job until the summer. I wouldn't recommend that last route, though, because we have a much shorter summer than most schools, at only 6 weeks.

Anyway, as long as you are cognizant of the date you need the money by, you can pick up a job whenever you feel comfortable with it. 🙂

Soo..Missouri interviews are fast approaching, and I'm starting to get really nervous. What are you guys doing to prepare? :scared:

Spending most of my time trying to forget how quickly January will be here! 😀 Shopping for clothes this weekend and finding heel-ish shoes I can actually walk in. I haven't really starting prepping for the actual interview besides thinking of general answers to a couple of questions. Next week I'm planning on beginning working through questions and putting my thoughts on current issues/ethics/etc. into words. It's coming up tooooo fast!

Well thankfully(?) this interview is only 15 minutes...

from what it sounded like, there won't be a lot of ethics questions, and more questions about your application and going into more detail about that. Plus time for us to ask questions.

Anyone who has interviewed before with mizzou, correct me if I'm wrong?

I haven't started preparing for this interview either :scared:. To make matters even more interesting, I have Penn's interview the weekend prior to Mizzou, which I also haven't started preparing for. It's going to be a greeeattt winter break.

I'll mostly be looking through interview feedback, and coming up with general answers for the obvious questions (why do you want to be a vet, tell us about yourself, etc).

yeah I have a Kansas State interview the day before my mizzou interview!!

but I'm mostly just thankful this is during winter break, so I'll have nothing else to focus on!

so no, besides practicing for years (no joke) what my response would be to random questions like "why do you want to be a vet" and "what are your greatest weaknesses", I haven't done anything and I probably won't until this weekend

Well back to studying for my Animal Behavior final!

i interviewed last year and they didn't ask me anything ethics related. a few of the questions i remember:

-what can you see yourself doing in 10 years?
-do you know what other jobs are available for a DVM besides private practice?
-they asked me about my extracurricular activities in high school and college and which one i felt as though i got the most valuable life experience out of
-what's your biggest weakness and why?
-what's your favorite class? what did you like about that class? (to which i answered physiology, they continued on past the 'what did i like about it' and asked what my favorite body system was and why and then asked about something very specific regarding that system) yeah, i bs-ed it a bit and said circulatory system and it totally felt like a 'gotcha' moment
-they asked about some of my animal experience as well
-then at the end they asked if i had anything else to say and that was pretty much it

Thank you! I'm a little afraid of the "do you have anything else to say" question. I imagine they want you to at least say something, but I can see myself turning into a rambling *******. Haha..or getting on my knees and begging for acceptance.

can anyone tell me what some of missouri's strong points are? do they have a strong program in research? trying to find out a little more about the school before the interview!

has anyone seen the massive snowstorm that is hitting Missouri right now.. man i hope traveling there this weekend isn't going to be a disaster

Well right now it's just bitterly cold in the Saint Louis area (as it has been for a while) but tonight it's going to hit hard. I work at an equine clinic and we moved all our appointments for tomorrow to today and friday just in case. Hopefully it won't be too bad but we do tend to get some wicked ice storms in this area.

It just started snowing here in Columbia around 2 pm, and we expect to get about 6 inches of snow tonight. The problem tomorrow will be with the wind blowing all of that snow around, but I'm not sure how this weekend is looking for the interviews. We're keeping our fingers crossed for traveler-friendly weather as much as you guys are!

Snow, blergh. Flying out of Philly early Friday morning, so here's hoping that it's at least doable.

How's everyone else feeling for this weekend? I go from feeling super nervous and panicked and underprepared to absolutely calm and convinced that I have this under control. Hopefully the latter feelings will prevail during the actual interview! :scared:

So I'm leaving for my first interview tomorrow 🙂! My interview isn't until Sunday, but I have a freaky long drive and want to have a good day in between.

I have a weather/clothing related question. As part of the tour, do we go to the teaching hospital? As I understand it, the lecture halls/teaching labs are in a different building. Will we be okay in interview clothing walking around on the tour? I have a skirt suit and sensible sandal shoes and I would really rather not have the hassle of changing after the interview.

Good luck :luck::luck::luck: to anyone who is interviewing at Missouri this weekend!!!!

To all who are interviewing at Missouri this weekend..GOOD LUCK!!!
I have an interview there next weekend, so if you guys are feeling especially helpful you should fill out some interview feedback for us next-weekenders to read before we go!!

Aren't interviews just a blast? 😉

Thank you very much! I'm extremely nervous..leaving tomorrow morning. :scared: And I will certainly fill out interview feedback!
