Quick question about the Missouri Supplemental App. It asks me to list my work experiences and I wanted to know if it would look bad for me to just type in the exact same stuff that I put on my VMCAS. Do you think the adcom will be irked that the descriptions on my VMCAS and on my supplemental for jobs are the same? Thanks

Nope! I kept the descriptions the same. I would say just definitely focus on your essay questions.

Wow, its weird that it almost seems like another lifetime that i was filling that bugger out. Agree with zeebra though, focus on essay questions.

Is there any way to find out what the essay questions are before starting the application? I have not created an account yet.

Thanks!

Not that I know of (unless someone is willing to share) but it only takes a second to create an account. I found it easiest to type/edit my essays for Mizzou directly on the app anyway since their character limits are so strange.

Yes, good point! Also, the essays may not be the same as last year. Just create an account, takes two seconds.

Working on my supplemental (this one is really long and intense!) and have a couple of questions.
For the 24 line limit for a lot of the essays, the box doesn't cut me off when I paste slightly more than that in. (It says 24 lines of no more than 80 characters each, so I wrote about this much in Word based on character count, but it was too long when in the actual application). Are they pretty strict about if you write a little beyond the limit?
The first essay is about your motivation for the career, why you selected vet med. That seems really similar to the basis behind the VMCAS PS. Can there be overlap here or should I try to be as separate as I can?
Laboratory animal experience - I don't have any experience working with live lab animals, but we did a bunch of dissecting and experiments with them in my animal physio class - would this count under this category or no?
Thanks! 😀

I typed mine in WORD but changed my margins so that it only allowed approx 80 characters per line. Then I pasted into MO's box. It worked well. I do remember that I was able to go passed the 24 line limit in MO's box but I was so worried about whether or not it would cut it out when they read it that I didn't go passed it. But I guess it is your choice. When you go to submit the app it shows you the full app including the essays and I remember that when I previewed it with the longer version that went passed 24 lines it did show up. But once again, do you want to risk the last sentence being cut off?

I went through about 5 edits per question on MO's supp. It is hard to get the most detail in with the correct word limit. Just keep having people help to edit out the fluff. Sometimes you don't notice the fluff until someone else points it out.

For the questions that were similar to VMCAS questions I tried not to repeat the same thing that i said in my PS. This is another opportunity for you to tell more about yourself. What I tried to do was go even more in depth into the topic they are asking about. I doubt you were able to go into extreme detail with every experience in your PS because there is a word limit. So IMO i'd take the time to use MO's supp to go into detail about every experience and also add some more emotion.

I would add as much info as possible for every question. Unless you literally have nothing to put (no research experience for a question about research). You may not have a lot of lab animal experience, but if you have worked with mice or rats in any setting I would mention it. It just shows that you are exposed to those animals. Just make sure that it is known you know this is minimal experience. Dont try to exaggerate your experience just to write more down for the question. And make sure to explain that it was in a class. You just don't want them to think that you were lying about the type or amount of experience.

It tells you if the essays are too long. When you click the 'save' button after updating an essay the light next to it will stay yellow if the essay is too long. It will only turn green if it's an acceptable length. Mine were way too long when I first wrote them and it took me a little while to figure out why the essay sections weren't 'green lighted' since by my count they fell within the acceptable range on word.
I don't think it will even let you fully submit if the essays aren't within the range (I think you need all 'green lights') but I definitely wouldn't test it since it probably will cut you off.

For the animal experience section, where it asks: "How many hours experience do you have working with this species/group while NOT observing a veterinarian?" Is this supposed to include even owning them as pets? Or should I just include hours for jobs and volunteer work relating to that animal type?

Yes, it does include pet ownership. I called and talked to Kathy to make sure a few weeks ago. Hope this helps!🙂 Just make sure your estimates are reasonable and you should be good to go.

Thanks scb44f!

Hm, I hadn't even thought to put in pet ownership. Not sure how to count the hours for that - just give an hour a day for years? I don't want to look too ridiculous...

To be honest, I estimated very conservatively. For instance, I put 100 hours down for the 5 ferrets we owned over the period of about 6 years, and 25 hours for a snake I was responsible for at one point. I'd rather way underestimate than try to "fluff" my hours (especially since I listed ownership of said animals in that specific section... they should be able to figure out that I didn't only own ferrets and the snake for 125 hours lol). I just wanted the number to reflect the fact that I have experience handling these animals, but that it was all because of general care.

For the biomedical experience, public health, and research experience section...

Did you take the description to mean that research that is non-bio medically related should be included? And would you consider being an EMT as "experience in the allied health professions?"

Thanks!

I don't remember the wording of the section exactly, and since I just submitted it yesterday, I don't have a printout of my application, so I don't know what to tell you about non-biomedical research besides definitely make sure it is somewhere on your application.

As for EMT experience, that is awesome, but I wouldn't necessarily put it under that section. I kind of think of allied health as promoting the One Health, One Medicine thing Mizzou has going on. To me, EMT experience doesn't really do much for that. However, I feel that whatever you choose to do with it, make sure it's on your application somewhere.

If worse comes to worst and you decide to put them under that section, they don't feel either of those experiences are fit to be in that section, but at least they are on your application, right? Vice versa, if you put them in extracurriculars, they're going to see them and if they choose, they can consider them to fit under the biomedical experience section.

From Missouri admission guide:
"Selection Process

Selection is based on meeting the academic eligibility requirements and attaining a satisfactory score from the interview. Eligibility is not limited to Missouri residents; however, the number of non resident students who can be accepted may be limited. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required."

Nothing bad to be international student, but it is not so difficult to read the requirements before applying.

Wow - seriously - this is a wildly inappropriate way to address your complaint - I'm unsure how not being able to apply to Missouri will leave you to "die suffering without a job" or what all Americans have to do with Missouri's admission requirements.

This forum is no place for racist remarks - it is a community for aspiring vets to lean on each other for support - not degrade people because of their nationality.
