MIT schooling - average stats, what are my chances?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi SDN! This forum has been extremely helpful to read and I thought I would finally post and see what y'all thought my chances were for med school. It sounds like my stats are average/lower than med schools would like.

MIT undegrad gpa 3.5
Graduate gpa ~3.3 in graduate engineering classes.

MCAT 31O, Ver 10, Phys 12, Bio 9, close to or almost expired (taken in 2006), so probably will have to retake, although I haven't been studying chemistry in years.

I'm hoping to finish my graduate program in 2011. Should I retake the MCAT and try to raise my GPA? Or should I apply now in 09 and see if I can defer a year?

Thanks!

Your GPA and MCAT is fine, we mostly only look at your undergrad performance. You have a good chance at an acceptance if you apply this year.

Your stats will pass screening cut offs at many schools. Whether you're ready to apply or not depends on other factors too, though. Do you have letters of reference lined up (you generally need a LOR from your grad school advisor, among others)? Do you have the average amount of clinical experience (some needs to be recent), physician shadowing, and community service? Any research, leadership, teaching to mention? If you have most of this, be sure the schools you apply to will allow a deferral (some don't). Once you have some schools in mind, you need to apply as soon as possible to get the greatest consideration of your file.

A 2006 MCAT is not valid at most schools since you would be entering in 2010. Most schools want the MCAT within 3 years of entrance, not 3 years of application.

The time the MCAT expires varies by school, so you'll need to check each one about this.

Yeah my bad - shouldn't have generalized that much. But definitely look up the schools you are applying to. Most are at the 3 year mark, but there are a handful that take up to 4 years.
