For some apps they have boxes where you can explain circumstances which you feel might have adversely affected your academic performace during college.

I did poorly during my freshman year....should i explain that?

im afraid they may look at it as an excuse for doing poorly

I thought mitigating circumstances meant that you may have suffered the loss of family member, extreme poverty, etc... and hence you did poorly for X or Y semester. I do not think that you use this box just to say that you did poorly because you had 1000 other things going around, or that you were young or old and were not used to the pace of college..

I think when it comes to the med school apps better to play it safe. If you did poorly and want to explain it becaues you think that it's something significant to you then you should. Anything to help the schools understand you better is good.

well i had just had a terrible breakup with my first relationship and i got caught up in the social aspects of school....i wasnt sure of my career path until after my freshman year....medicine gave me purpose and direction......now thats the truth.....??????

but i feel that may not work

Hmmm....I think I would leave that out. Youd efinitely don't want to say you got "caught up in the social aspect"...partying too much is not an excuse. As for the relationship thing, I am not too sure about that either.
