Mitt Romney at DMU

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This should help with getting some recruitment.

DMU - It's closer to the motherland geographically than most of the other schools (Temple, NY, Barry, Ohio, Chicago). I believe CSPM recruits at Utah schools and I understand AZPOD has a high LDS proportion as well.

When the question-answer session comes, i hope someone will ask questions related to Podiatry and other issues related to it.

and something about student loans... it's really getting way too expensive for everyone in any medical profession. How could you be in debt $200k and make less than that a year?

lol... DMU is a hotbed for mormons 😉

Anybody know why?

It's not just DMU, from how I understand it, U of I med and dental schools are packed with mormons. Just one of those states that has a high population of them.

I would have to disagree. There is not a high proportion of Mormans at the University of Iowa at all. For that matter the entire state is mostly some denomonation of Christian. They must be imported from somewhere else 🙂

although this is debatable - mormons are Christian

also in the class of 2011 at ocpm there are about 10-12 mormons and they tend to stick together. i just think there is a high percentage of mormons in graduate schools across the nation (with noticeably higher percentages closer to utah and the west in general).

I heard the mormon clique was involved in the "cheating" incident not too long ago at OCPM. I think it was in the first year biochem class. The students took the test then afterwards, wrote down all the questions and answers they remembered. This was then passed down their circle over the years. I think the kicker was that the biochem professor pretty much used the exact same questions from year to year. Of course, this is just something I heard and it may or may not be true.

Any word on this OCPM people?

This is also to be a rumor at DMU. Can't confirm or deny it, but that was the buzz going around last year.

haven't heard anything about it, but it wouldnt make much sense

On a positive note, the Mormon guys at Scholl are really great guys and definately wouldn't cheat. If the other Mormons from other schools are anything like these guys, I would have to agree with jonwill and say I don't see it happening, especially a group of em.

I disagree with this, but also I think just DMU has alot of mormons, but Des moines or Iowa in general does not.

The guys at DMU pretty much stick together. They'll say hi to you and make small talk, but that's about as far as it goes. over a 1/4 of my 2010 Pod class are mormons. I know that the mormon religion is a branch of Christianity, I wasn't debating that.

no way. here is why: the biochem teacher owns this website with like 1600 biochem questions on it. he makes his tests largely from this pool (i heard 95% of the last test this semester) and our year was pretty much all from this website. so, if they are trying to run a cheating ring, they are idoits--the teacher all but tells you how to pull an A in class--study the questions. most of them however are pretty smart and really wouldn't need to cheat from what i have seen.
im pretty sure mormons are christian.🙂

... Religion doesn't mean much unless you actually live it...
Very true^

I certainly don't care what people do in their religious life or Sat/Sun as long as they are on time, know their stuff, and work hard. Religion for me is a way to keep humble and give thanks. I can't think of any religion that doesn't have a positive message and build character. There are many far less productive things to do with free time.

It can get a bit over the top and interfere at work if someone can't ever work X shifts because of their religion or has to take breaks to go pray, but that's a pretty small % of people who are that devout nowadays.

As for people of X religion sticking together, that's basic sociology and human nature. People will always tend to fraternize, date, etc with people who look, talk, act, etc similar to themselves.

That is a very good point. When a group of people form a clique, outsiders often get upset and then make a generalization toward those who possess the same similar characteristc as those within the clique. But its human nature to congregate with those who share the same sentiments, common interests or characteristics. Examples range from race to college major to common hobbies. I doubt these people exclude on purpose. Chances are, every one of us is in some form of clique whether we know it or not. Thats how we find friends.

wow... I didn't mean to side track Mitt Romney....

Great for DMU, good to see more podiatry schools in the news other than NYCPM. (SCPM is still the best 😛)

What was NYCPM in the news for?^

I think the student research symposium at NYCPM is a great idea. I'm not really sure why they are putting it 2wk before ACFAS and in the coldest days of winter, but oh well. They need to put it in summer in the future... less chance of blizzards and no other real big pod research meetings to compete with. Still, I applaud the idea and concept; supporting student research is important.

I would have to strongly agree with you. The Mormon guys at Scholl are good people and wouldn't cheat. They are a good group of honest, down to earth guys.

I'm curious about NYCPM in the news as well. One thing I saw was students and faculty on CBS with Dave the weather man (he just introduced the group). The other one I heard/read about was the medicaid fraud incident at the foot clinics of new york a few years back.

haha, yeah that's what I heard too

I think you guys are answering your own questions... 🙂

The Mormon guys at Temple are actually some of the best students there. Very dedicated they are! I would wager that this is the trend at many other schools also. In fact, there is a nice mormon population in the APMSA.

Anyone who claims to be religious and cheats, steals test questions and lies about it all without a problem and hides behind the misconception that "everyone is doing it" and then goes to church/synagog/temple or whatever and puts on their dandiest religious face.... probably should reevaluate their belief system and go with something a little less self-righteous because they are an

embarassment to their religion and the people who actually have the courage to practice what they preach.😱

thank you captain obvious

Wow, It's good to actually hear people saying some good things about Mormons. You know it is usually the other way saying that we are all wacked out poligamists. Yes I am a Mormon and I will be going to Podiatry school in 2008, I haven't made my decision yet.

By the way yes we are just as Christian as any other relegion and we don't practice polygamy anymore that was along time ago. And from what I am hearing about the cliques that really suprises me. I live in Utah and probably have more non-member freinds than Mormon freinds.

Anyway maybe I'll see some of you guys next year. I was accepted at NYCPM, OCPM, and Barry so far with Scholl and DMU wanting me to re-take the MCAT for acceptance. Don't know if its worth it or not.

You must have a lot of online friends because there are no non-mormons in Utah. It's against the Law you know under civil codes 1820,1830, and 1844.

I forgot how much the MCAT is, but the BOARDS (I,II, and III) are $1000 each, tuition will be roughly $25,000 and housing/Misc add about $15,000 more for 4 years! so if you look at the total cost of your future, the MCAT is a small part even if it looks very expensive now. FYI.

Thanks Stafocker

bdaddyjolley I know you are kidding but there are seriously alot of people that think that. Any way best of luck to you guys.

If you read between the lines you'll find it was an inside joke for you. But I see what you are saying, there are uneducated people out there.

i hear you. it makes hard when the leaders are doing it too! ( let me clarify...it makes it hard to put stock into what the leaders preach when they are not trying to follow what they preach.)

on the other hand, no one is perfect and even though a person subscribes to a set of religious values with every intention of following every little guideline, the likelihood of a person operating at 100% all of the time is low. you certainly can appreciate that..i know i don't nail my test with 100% every time i take one. it just doesn't happen.

I would have to disagree. There is not a high proportion of Mormans at the University of Iowa at all.

Whoa...I would have to disagree with you. The U of I College of Medicine is chock full o' Mormons. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing. It's just an observation. By the looks of it, HawkeyePod, you're an undergrad or something. So your observation is likely correct with respect to your program.

Scoll's class of 2011 has the same number of mormon students. They are great guys (and gal) who are extremely focused. And I have to agree with another poster that these guys wouldn't cheat if their lives depended on it. I definitely feel like they are an asset to our class.

As an LDS student at BYU I thought I would just provide a couple of statistics found on the BYU website. Here is the link: http://news.byu.edu/homepage/mentored.pdf

BYU is:

#8 nationally for # of students who eventually earn PhD
#1 nationally for # of students going to dental school
#6 nationally for # of students going to law school
In the top 10 nationally for # of students going to medical school

This briefly illustrates perhaps why so many LDS students are found at the various schools. Personally, I hope that no LDS student was a part of any cheating scandal. No matter what religion someone comes from, I would hope they are upstanding and honest.

Being from Colorado I'm really looking forward to finishing at BYU and continuing my education at another institution (either DMU, OCPM or Scholl).

what are the chances of getting one of the presidential candidate debates held at one of the pod schools? who do we need to talk to about that??😀
