Help me decide: Hello all! With the april 30 deadline being tomorrow, I just wanted some feedback on where to attend medical school! Very thankful to be in this position and for your help!

LSU Shreveport: NBME exams (at the end of each block), research opportunities are plentiful. They just built a new medical school building also.

Mizzou Med: Non-NBME exams (at the end of each block and you get 10 days off after every block!), Significantly cheaper (by about 80k over 4 years), slightly better research opportunities.
Cons: P/F for first year but second year is H/P/F. There is a chance i have to rotate at their springfield campus (20% of class).

Both emphasize active learning (case-based learning), both have mandatory lectures. Locations are roughly the same. The match lists also end up being the same.

I thought this was an easy win for LSU but then you said 80k less at Mizzou. What are you interested in specializing in?

Mizzou has a variety of exams, including clinical simulation and NBME style (although in house written). This may be a con? Also do know if lsu has solely NBME exams, and nothing else?
Also can you offer a little more info about lsu’s research? I heard Mizzou was strong too.

LSU is NBME only. Research wise if you say they are equal/ mizzou is stronger then that’s fine. It’s hard to quantify which school has more so let’s say they are equal. I think 80k is a big price difference and they are similar enough. How was your second look experiences?

Unfortunately I got into both schools after the second look. Do you have any other specific info about how big research may be at lsu? I was super interested in ortho and Mizzou has a great ortho program. Unsure about LSU

I just know they are productive, and you’d have an upper hand at matching Shreveport or New Orleans for orthopedic since they both love taking LSU Health students. Again, hard to quantify research but check faculty at both schools and see how much they publish/ projects they are doing

Sounds good, thanks so much! Any particular choice you would pick?

It’s just tough because of the price difference. Is mizzou offering you a scholarship which is why it’s cheaper?
No, mizzou happens to be in Missouri, where I went for undergrad. So I’m hoping to convert to Missouri residency. Assuming the cost was the same, which one would you pick then?

Oh I see. If cost was the same I’d pick LSU personally. For the reasons I’ve listed. But I also know nothing about mizzou. So you’re not a resident? But if you get residency then you get the tuition decrease?

I'm not a resident right now but would be able to switch, i also called the admissions office earlier today and they said its possible. Looking at the match though, LSU has no orthopedic surgery residents that matched into new orleans or shreveport.

was just saying LSU likes to match their own people, but its not a hard rule or anything. Thats def a pro that Missouri lets you reclassify. not many states do that anymore.
