Short bio: I don't know what I want to do specialty-wise, and the academic structure seems pretty similar between the two schools. The only thing really leaning me towards Creighton is their match list compared to Mizzou's. I do not want to match into the midwest and I'm not in love with either of the cities that these two schools are in.

Specialty interests (sorry its broad): IR, interventional cards, surgery, critical care, ophtho, anesthesiology, IM

Mizzou
Pros
  • Went to Mizzou for undergrad, very familiar w med school and hospital
  • closer to home
  • considerably cheaper

Cons
  • Matching mostly to Mizzou which I'm not interested in doing
  • would like a fresh start in terms of city

Creighton
Pros
  • Match locations are pretty diverse
  • I would like a new experience in terms of city/school etc if there isn't a glaring reason that I should think about attend Mizzou
  • from what I've read and heard, they seem to have a better mentorship system for match/residency apps

Cons
  • farther from home
  • don't quote me on this, but one of my mentors (who is faculty at Mizzou) told me research is harder to find there

I wanted to keep it as concise as possible but I might've left out important info. Let me know

Thank you!

I would go with Mizzou for cost and distance from family. I would also argue that it has a better reputation, given that it has more home residency programs in diverse specialties like ophtho and anesthesia which Creighton does not have.

Your main hesitations with Mizzou seem related to the match location tendencies, and you really cannot compare a public school with a private one on this front. Creighton accepts students from all over the country while Mizzou sticks more strictly to MO residents. Most people want to be near their support systems during residency, so of course Mizzou tends to match people to the midwest while Creighton sends people all over. Additionally, matching to a particular place is no longer a concern for med students since program and region-specific signaling began.
