Is anyone doing MMEP this summer? If so, where? I got into the U of Washington and Columbia programs but I am not sure which one to go to...decisions decisions. I can only imagine how hard the decision of which med school to go to is compared to this 6 week program.

i got into the yale and columbia programs, and chose yale. I hope I made the right choice.

hey all,

i did mmep last summer at njms, it was a nice experience, could have been more organized, but nice nonetheless. my friend did the yale mmep and absolutely loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it too late to apply to this now? Where can I get an application? Also, if I am asian indian, would I not qualify for this? 😕

Birdie,

I think last year they accepted applications into the spring (at least for the one at U of A) and I know that the one at Arizona generally takes people who are not considered URM. A friend of mine who is URM did it here last summer and found it helpful, especially in terms of MCAT prep, and she said that at least 1/3 of the class was not URM. You might want to call the sites and ask... I think they take non-URMs if they can''t fill all their slots. Hope that helps.

birdie,

check out www.aamc.org for mmep deadlines. i did it at the university of chicago consortium in 1999--excellent experience.

If I am applying to med school the same summer as I am doing MMEP, do they look down upon that? Do any schools have guaranteed interviews for MMEP graduates?

According to my friend who did it here at Arizona there were people in the class who were currently applying to med schools. She said they split the class into 2 groups and gave those who were applying application and personal statement help, and the rest of the people focused more on MCAT prep during the classroom time. All participated in the clinical activities. From what she said the admissions people told them, it did not sound like it gave anyone a huge advantage in admissions at U of A but it definitely did not hurt, and it gave them a chance to meet the deans which could only help I would think. But it did not get them an interview or anything. I dunno how it works at other sites.

MMEP isnt only for URM. Anyone can apply. This girl in my class who went to the Yale program last year, said the program was great, very well structed and organized. Not only that, the program is absolutely FREE! You can still apply, but the earlier you apply the better it is- they are all n a rolling basis. I have been accepted to all the sites I applied to, but I sent my application like a month ago.

Yale or Virginia? I got accepted into both and vacillated to make a decision. Both programs are excellent in many aspects. Anyone out there who have previously attend MMEP at Virginia, please share your experience. Thanks and Merry Christmas to all.

I've considered the yale program, and it seems more "level specific." By that I mean that MMEPers get separated depending on what stage of the application process they're at. The ones late in the process get extensive MCAT prep while the others do more clinical. This is what I got from my friend that attended last year, but she says that she loved Yale. The campus is beautiful but the area sucks is also what she told me. Myself, I'll be going to Columbia. NY city here I come!

It's for minorities in medicine....stupid if you ask me that minorities get their own program.....just abotu as dumb as affirmative action is.

do i smell a hater?

funny. You know it's true.

If everytime someone mentions URM's or AA, and you get your panties in a bunch......you might just be a redneck.

That was a good line.

Is that your icon photo, wolferman? If so, and please don't take this the wrong way, but are you a URM? You don't "look" like a URM (at least from that photo).

Not that the icon is clear with the huge question mark plastered over it. 😛

That is my photo in the icon. And probably the reason I don't "look" like a URM is because I'm half URM and half caucasian.

What's up woflerman?

You make it sound like URM and caucasian are mutually exclusive. I don't know if your "URM half" is African-American or Latino, but the average African-American is almost 1/4 Caucasian (and that's just the average) and Latino can be either Caucasian, Asian, or Black-African:

Racially, Latinos can be Asian (indigenous North or South American Indians), Caucasian (example: Southern European descendants such as boxer Oscar de la Hoya or singer Marc Anthony) or Black-African (example: Brazilian soccer player, Pele) or bi-racially Asian/Caucasian (exampe: Jennifer Lopez).

Also, not all "whites" (or "light-skinned people") are Caucasian and not all Caucasians are "white"...they can be "people of color" as well.

Of the 3 races (Asian, Black-African, Caucasian), skin color does not necessarily determine one's race.

There are light-skinned ASIANS:
northern Chinese, Koreans, Mongolians, North American native Indians/Eskimos/Aleutians...

and

dark-skinned ASIANS ("people of color"):
South East Asians (Vietnamese, Thailand, etc...), South American/Central American/Caribbean/Mexican indigenous native Indians, Polynesians (natives of Tahiti, Samoa, Hawaii, etc...).

And there are light-skinned CAUCASIANS:
Europeans, Russians...

and

dark-skinned CAUCASIANS ("people of color"):
People from North Africa and the Middle East (Libyans, Morrocans, Egyptians, Palestinians, Syrians, etc...), people from Western Asia (Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc...) and people from India.

I attended the MMEP at UVA in the summer of 2001. I was only a rising sophomore at the time, but the experience was very valuable. The year I attended, they lowered admission numbers from over 100 to around 60 (I think). Because of the smaller numbers, I was able to peronally interact with many deans, doctors, etc. The town UVA is in is small, and not much goes on, so we mostly stayed on campus. Besides the fact that we had to provide the majority of our meals, I enjoyed the experience. The most interesting part were the rotations we got to do in the emergency room. We wore the short white jackets the medical students usually wear, but most of the patients assumed we were doctors and treated us as such. Also, we had MCAT prep by medical students, a "Where Doctors Work" series where we visited different departments within the hospital, medical lectures where doctors from all over came to speak about their specialties, etc. Program participants ranged from 18 year old rising sophomores to 35 year old engineers and social workers looking for a career change. If you visit the MMEP site, they have examples of daily schedules and events for each location. I used that narrow my choices down.

Nothing's up. I was merely explaining to CatsAreKillers that the reason I don't "look like a URM" is because I'm half caucasian and half URM. Honestly, I had no idea that my comments would slight you to such a degree that you'd feel it necessary to school me on the definition of a URM. I should mention, however, that by your definition I am still half URM (African American) and half caucasian (Irish, English, Dutch). And while I appreciate the education, you've only proven to me that you are 100% uptight.
