Mmep

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I participated in MMEP in 2000 at The University of Alabama School of Medicine. I enjoyed the program, but they may have made some changes to it the year after I participated. There's a lot of information on the MMEP website (http://www.aamc.org/students/minorities/mmep/ ), but let me know if you have any specific questions.

I participated in the MMEP in Chicago. I would have to say it was the experience that increased my motivation to become a doctor. I shadowed several doctors and even observed cadavers. I highly recommend it.

It gave me something to talk about at my interviews and I have been accepted to medical school. Thus, I believe it does help out a lot. I think about 65% of MMEP graduates eventually do get into medical school. Good luck.

I also participated in the MMEP program. I did mine in Nashville at Fisk and Vanderbilt. It was a fantastic experience and I would definitely say that it helped me. I would highly recommend that you participate. As the above poster stated, check out the website.

what yr did u do Chicago own. I know folks who did it in 1998, and 2000.

@poster, MMEP is definitely great, I didnt do it, but did other summer enrichment programs, and many of my friends did it. Some sites are different from others, like with Baylor u can get class credit. I'd say do it at a schl that u would love to go to, that way when its time to apply, ur foot is already in the door!!

Hey lotanna, I did it in 2001. I'd like to add that the Chicago one is a consortment of 4 schools: Northwestern, Loyola, Rush, and U of Chicago. I only applied to Loyola and haven't heard from them yet, so I'm not sure if it helps in attending MMEP at the school you eventually want to go to.

hey lotanna... I remember you too. Thanks for the well wishes. I hope that everything goes well this cycle for you. Wake is a good school. Good luck. PM me if you need anything.

As for MMEP, I think that it does help to attend MMEP at a school that you want to go to. There are a couple of people that I know of from my program that did just that. I don't know if MMEP helped, but it couldn't have hurt.

Well it sure wouldnt hurt especially if u made some connections while there. Goodluck we all gon' make it 😛

@cocoabutter, Congrats! Glad everything is going great. It all worked out in the end, show sthis whole process isnt just about #s like SDN thinks. I'll let u know if I receive a secondary, and how that all goes. Keep on keepin on

Is there a reason why all hispanics are eligible for the program instead of just the URM hsipanics (mexican, puerto rican)?

Why shouldn't they be. Besides, they revised the URM definition to now mean any ethnic group that is underrepresented in medicine. This would include other hispanics.

When did the definition change? I was always under the impression that the URM definition was only Mexican-Americans, Puerto-Ricans, Blacks, Native Americans, and Native Alaskans.

Here's the link.

I'm glad they finally changed it. It was ridiculous to say only Mexicans and Puerto Ricans were URMs when there are so many more other hispanics in the US currently.

I participated in MMEP in '99 at Baylor. The experience was awesome. The shadowing was great. I would suggest you attend.

I'm not even sure that new definition even helps because it leaves things pretty vague since each individual school now has the discretion to determine who is "underrepresented in medicine" and who is not. It will probably help hispanics as a whole in the end, but leaving it so open seems like it would only encourage more criticism. They really need to spell it out in a way that everyone will understand.

slickness, what undergrad did you go to? i have a friend who went to mmep that year who might know you. 🙂

I did MMEP at Columbia this past summer. It was awesome.

Hey nina,
I tried to pm you but your pm is turned off or something. Could you fix it?

Hey Slickness,

Problem fixed, I think.

I participated at the MMEP at Yale in 2000. It was awesome and exposed us to life as first year medical students... I will definately recommend it as well.
