So for MMIs, are there any implied general rules?
Especially for the acting stations: are you allowed to make physical contact? Ask them if they want water even if there is no water in the room? etc?

I'm sure each school will have different "rules." I only had 1 MMI interview, I think it was 8 stations, you had 2 minutes between each station to read the scenario outside the room, and 8 minutes inside the room to talk about your response to the scenario. You can just go in and start talking about your response.

For the acting interviews, you have VERY little time, so offering to get the SP a drink of water might be a kind gesture, but you don't want to waste time on that (plus you normally don't do that when interviewing patients/doing physicals anyway). Not sure why you are wondering about personal contact...do you mean like shaking their hand? If the scenario warrants it, sure. My acting scenario was with a woman who was playing my cousin, so shaking her hand would have been awkward. If you are acting with an SP, yes you should shake their hand.

You are probably thinking about it too much. It's quick. You will just say what comes naturally in that situation. I can't imagine being able to prepare for it other than being able to clearly communicate your opinions (in general).

Or if you are suppose to comfort a friend, would you pat them on the back?

The best thing you can probably do is just know how to analyze ethical scenarios. Know how to weigh the different factors of a situation against each other and have reasoning why and how to reach a conclusion.

This. The MMI questions are designed to not have a right answer, but to see how you analyze them and how well you can formulate AND communicate your thoughts in such a narrow timeframe.

That being said, sample questions are only so helpful - the situations you're given are completely unique to the school so you probably won't find the same one twice. Plus, even though you might have 8 or 9 stations, you don't feel the time pass because you're in analysis mode, and I found it really fun as I look back on it.

I know this may sound stupid, but I read Medical Ethics for Dummies on the airplane. lol, it does have some good examples to get you started

False. While schools can, in fact, customize their database, there are only a few hundred "official" MMI questions supplied by McMaster with interpretation suggestions, etc. I definitely got the same MMI questions at multiple schools. That said, they weren't exactly hard ones to predict and if you have not already come across some of them (whether you realized it or not), you haven't been doing enough mock interviews....

I have a question about acting scenarios...I know there is an actor and a rater in the room. Once you enter the room, are you expected to just begin acting out the scenario, pretending as if the rater isn't even there? Or do you enter, talk to the rater and actor to introduce yourself first, and then begin "acting" when they tell you to start?

Sorry for the nitpicky question. Just want to make sure I don't do anything that might give rise to an awkward situation.

Yes.

And they will explain those things to you.... There's an orientation before the interview

Yes.

Sorry, just to clarify are you saying yes to:

1) enter the room and just begin acting or
2) introduce yourself to the rater and actor and then start the scenario.

It will depend on the school. They will tell you before hand what they want you to do(introduce yourself or just begin).
