Okay, so I have Certification Review for Pharmacy Technicians by Reifman, and it appears to be a fabulous book...however the copy I was able to get my paws on is only the second edition. (This edition came out in 1996, there have been a handful of updated books since.) I'm wondering if anyone who's taken the test thinks I'd be better off finding a more recent version (for the sake of the section on pharmacy law) or just looking for a resource on pharmacy law elsewhere.

Any contributions are appreciated! 😛

search this yahoo group!!!

The law sections of the test were very basic, and since pharmacy laws vary from state to state so much there's not much they can test everyone on. Just basic stuff like who's able to take new prescriptions over phone/fax and other stuff like that...(even though that varies from state to state as well)

I wouldn't worry about the law section too much. Just know your role as a technician.

Which edition is the most recent? Is it the 6th edition?

I agree that copy is too old.I took the test on Nov and thought i failed since i studied for like two weeks or so. But suprise i passed the test.So what's my point.Know your basic math and obvious classes of drugs.i think i did so well in tmath and thats why i passed since all those drugs were basically foreign to me. Oh yeah visit places likes barnes and noble and check the books they have pliz dont limit yourself to one book.

How well acquainted would you say your were w/ the drugs?? Did you know ~1 drug per class or so? I'm confortable w/ calculations (hopefullly that will be duplicated for law) but I feel sooooo overwhelmed with the drugs. How do you all, if any did for the PTCE, learn so many drugs brand/generic names, therapeutic uses, adverse effects, and dosage forms without going bonkers?? I still have a whole month of studying without classes and a little more than a month more to study while taking my major classes at USD, so I have hope someone out there can help me.

I concentrated on the top 100. You just need an outline of the test itself and you will be able to find anything on the internet that relates that topic. I would also know the basic calculations used in the pharmacy setting. It might sound silly but everytime a commercial for a drug came on, I would repeat the names to myself over and over again.

You are just going to have to learn them 😉. They will not ask you about all the top drugs but it is very wise to be familiar with generic names. I thought the test(s) varied in content from year to year anyway (as new drugs are constantly emerging). 😕

http://www.ptcb.org/exam.practice.asp

i took the ptce in november. its fairly simple b/c most of the drugs i was familiar with because i see them at my retail job. this website has a practice ptce test. sign up. its free. 140 sample questions. i got 85-90 right on the practice test, and ended up getting 830 out of 900 on the real test.

there are more sample questions here:
http://www.pharmacyexam.com/RGPTE_sample3.asp

don't stress about it too much.

Thanks for the help 2badr and iamhungry!

I looked up past posts by you both and came across THIS THREAD

where s13 had a very good idea....divide the agent's generic names up by suffixes. With a few exceptions, where you can just memorize the whole generic name if there was a conflict to your "rules", this works perfect for me! I'll still have to grind my teeth and memorizing each generics brand equivalent, but that should be alot easier now that I'll have a better understanding of the material!

Once again SDNers come up BIG with help. Thanks everyone!

All I got to say is to never use the Delmar 2nd Edition book. Possibly the worst book ever. The formulas it gave me were wrong and many times the answers in the back didn't go with the questions in the front. Stay away from this book!

Oooo....thanks for the advice. I was actually thinking of shelling out some $$ to buy that one for a second study guide to use. So thanks for the save!

Anyone know where I can find some old PTCE questions??

The ones from http://www.ptcb.org/exam.practice.asp have now disappeared, I think due to the launch of the new PTCB website. Anyone?

P.s.- I'm poor, so I'm looking for alternatives to the PTCB's $25 online sample questions...

Oh no!!!

I was relying on those questions to study for the upcoming test. I should have written them down. 🙁 If anyone has a copy of the questions/answers, please pm me.

BTW, anyone else taking the test this March at the San Jose, CA testing center?

Getting ready for the March 19 exam!! Does anyone have a good list of drug suffixes used to determine class to use as reference. Also those who took the last exam was it more calculations or more drug-drug interactions.

I'm sure drug suffixes would be in any PTCB study guide. But the most common ones you'll see will be:
-olol (BP drug like propranolol)
-pril (BP drug like captopril)
-azepam (benzodiazepine - anxiolytic like diazepam)
-dipine (BP drug like amlodipine)
-mycin (antiobiotic like erythromycin)
-cillin (antibiotic like amoxicillin)

I don't know, that's all I can come up with right now. I'm sure others can add to this list.

Ok you guys, results for march 19 are supposed to be up tomorrrow. Those of you who took the last test, do the results end up on the site early in the day or later on? I would really like to know if I passed as soon as I can.
Thanks
