Damn, that's a nice pistol. Just picked up a Springfield Armory XD45, but would love to have the HK. I'll make do with 13 in the clip and 1 in the hole 👍

PMMD

I actually thought about the xd over my glock....

Anyways, for IDPA, the rules says you can't load more than 10+1, so 13 would be plenty for this game.

Mil et al,

I'm not a gun guy.

I'd like to get an automatic to shoot.

I'm settled on a 9mm since it'll be mostly for at the range, and thereafter sitting in a box unless extinuating (sic?) cirumstances arise....like a hurricane.

Someone told me to stay away from a Glock since the only safety is the middle trigger thinghy....and get a Beretta instead.

I've shot a .45 Glock and reallly liked the feel of it...just don't need that much gun.

Assume I'm settled on the 9mm.

Whats your suggestion?

The Glocks are NICE...G17 I think is a full size 9mm...if you're OK with the light trigger pull and that it goes BANG everytime you pull the trigger.

Otherwise, I really like the Heckler & Koch USP....polymer frame...so very light....rails for accessories if you're so inclined....EXTRA large trigger guard should you decide that shoot with gloves on....DA/SA option....with a safety for cocked and locked carry if you so desire....

In reality, they're ALL good...I wish I had enough room in my safe for one of everything.

Safeties are over-rated. The point of one is to make is so that unless you pull the trigger, the gun won't go boom. In that regard, Glocks have safeties. You can't rely on a safety, double action or any other mechanism to prevent the gun from going to boom when pulled. If a kid is old enough to accidentally get into a gun, they are old enough to accidental pull off the safety.

The Glock is relatively inexpensive and very reliable. They are a reasonable choice (BTW, I am a Glock hater). There are other choices in the same zone: Smith and Wesson M&P or Sigma, the Springfield XD series and others. In a slightly higher price range comes Sig Sauer, Beretta, and H&K.

Personally, I like steel frame pistols in the classic 1911 pattern.

What you need to do is find a range that rents and handle a lot of guns. Find that one that fits and points best and is fun to shoot. If it is going to be a range toy, look for things like match barrels, lighter crisp triggers and larger (possibly) adjustable sights. Try a few different calibers: Just because you don't like the recoil of a .40, doesn't mean that a .45 will be worse.

You may also consider getting a dedicated target gun, such a Ruger Mark III or a Browning Buckmark. Heck, one might be worth getting anyway, since the ammo (22LR) is dirt cheap and they are good for learning how to be a good shooter.

There is only one safety ever. Its housed in that large appendage attached to the neck. If you have to rely on a manual safety to not shoot something you don't want to shoot you shouldn't have a gun.

Think of this like any machine. If you use it with fair regularity like Mil does then the manual of arms (how to use the weapon) becomes second nature. If don't intend to practice a lot and regularly then you want the the simplest manual of arms you can find. Essentially you want something that you pull the trigger and it goes bang. For a long time the weapon of choice was a revolver. A .38 is reasonably powerful and six shots will usually settle most problems. The Glock is essentially a semi automatic version of a revolver. The manual of arms is slightly more complicated but essentially once its loaded, pull the trigger and it goes bang. The HK is nice but has an extra step in the manual of arms. In what is probably the most stressful situation (deciding whether to shoot someone or not) you are now distracted by trying to remember whether the safety is on or not.

For the situation that you describe my suggestion would be either a well made .38 caliber revolver or a Glock. If you are willing to practice and take some classes there are a lot of other pistols that will suit you well. I have a lot of different choices. The one that I would grab in an emergency is this:

Jet, if you do wind up with a gun (which I think is a great idea), please do my peace of mind a favor and make sure to educate your little gorillas about gun safety. They're never too young to learn about the proper handling of a gun or what to do if they come across one.

I believe the NRA still supports the Eddie Eagle program, which I believe would be age-appropriate for your boys.

Speaking of HK. What do you think about the P7?

Got a nice vid on www.liveleak.com about midway down shows a 2 year old shootin' his Daddy in the belly with a pistol. Big Picture-- stay away from weddings and countries where guns are frequent at weddings. Regards, ----Zippy

Yeah, but unfortunately dude already passed on his genes.

And, here's a direct link to the video:

That looked like at least a 9mm pistol, too. What an idiot for handing that to a 2-year-old. And, the angle of the shot... probably right up into the old thoracic cage. Would be suprised if that dude didn't buy the farm.

Which brings up another point/word of advice, Zip...

The local gun range I regularly shoot at doesn't have a range master. When I go shooting, I scan the parking lot area and the range to see if there are any kids around. When I say "kids", I mean anyone under the age of 15 - even if they are with their parents. There are days I've gone up there and there are five-year-olds running around. I can't always say that I've noticed "daddy" keeping a close eye on them either.

If I see kids there, I put it in reverse, back-up, and drive away for another day. I don't need to bust caps that badly. Kids and guns, even when "supervised" by their parents, increase the risk:benefit ratio for my enjoyment in snapping-off a few rounds to an unnacceptable level.
