So I got this email today from ABIM with the title "ABIM Policy Change Regarding Certification Status"

"In response to feedback from the internal medicine community and diplomates, the ABIM Board of Directors has changed ABIM's policy regarding certification status and enrollment in the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program for diplomates, like you, who earned initial certification since 2013 or renewed certification since 2014.

Under the previous policy, diplomates could lose certification simply for failure to enroll in MOC. Effective immediately, diplomates who are meeting all other programmatic requirements will not lose certification simply for failure to enroll in MOC. Learn more...

We wanted to make you aware of this policy change and offer the option of a refund should you no longer wish to be enrolled in MOC this year for your Internal Medicine certification.

Please keep in mind that if you receive a refund, your MOC enrollment will be canceled and you will be reported as “Certified, Not Participating in MOC” on abim.org and to the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). In addition, you will no longer have access to ABIM activities or your MOC Status Report.

Please be assured that we will continue to reach out to you by e-mail with important upcoming deadlines whether you request a refund or not.

  • If you would like to remain enrolled in MOC, you do not need to do anything.
  • If you no longer wish to be enrolled in MOC this year, please reply to this e-mail and note which certification(s) you would like to be refunded.
    • Our Diplomate Services team will confirm your eligibility and begin the process of issuing the refund.
    • Please allow an estimated 8 to 10 weeks for refunds to be processed.
      • If you paid by credit card, the refund will be issued to the card ABIM has on file.
    • All refund requests must be submitted by October 31, 2015."

I wonder what this all means...

I just got board certified this year. Is there any advantage to delaying singing up for MOC or should I just sign up now?

The OP post is out of date and there's been a number of developments since then. Anyone whose certification expires in 2018 or later (i.e. everyone whose last certification was in 2008 or later) will be under a new system that seems a fair bit less onerous. People whose certification expires in 5 days or in 2017 still have to do the full 10-year exam.

I don't think it makes any difference when you sign up for it.

thanks for the info. I guess i'll just have to accept it and sign up for it :arghh:

My understanding is that I can choose in 2017 if I want to do a small exam every two years or continue doing a big formal exam every 10 years.

I'll probably opt for the every two year deal.

hhmmm, both sound pretty terrible... .. I already hate ABIM and I only just become certified

So what is everybody doing? Are you enrolling or not?

I'm still hesitant about enrolling.
