Mom wants to move OOS after my undergrad, how does this affect my residency when applying for MD?

I’m a long ways out from applying for med school (in my 2nd year of undergrad at a Cal State). I will probably have to do a small DIY postbacc because my major doesn’t cover all of the prerequisites. My mom, who I live with and is the only one paying for my education, said she plans on moving out of CA after I graduate from undergrad. Probably a stupid question, but will this affect my CA residency even though i’ve been a CA resident my whole life? I will probably still be living here in an apartment if I can afford it on my own.

It will not affect your state residency if you don't want it to. If you stay in California, cool you are Californian. If you move with her and stay in that moved-to state for (most states it is a year) and are working etc. then, by most states laws, you will be able to change legal state of residence. However, most CA schools will still grandfather you in based on having completed highschool and undergrad in CA within the last X years.

You will be able to retain CA residency regardless of her status if you stay in the state.

Depending on the state where she is moving, it wouldn’t be the worst idea to change your residency. CA is a very tough state to be a resident of when applying to med school.

If you want to change residency, it depends on the state she moves to. Many have a 1-year requirement to establish residency, but some are more (and this may be 1-year at the time of application, NOT matriculation). Of those that have a 1 year requirement, some have restrictions that make it more difficult to establish residency if you are also enrolled in a college in that state.

This, however, can also depend on whether you are a dependent. If your mother still claims you as a dependent at that point, you might be able to establish residency based on her domicile, not yours.

Check on the rules for the particular state she will be moving to.
