I matched into montefiore,NY (of course i am an img !).just wondering if anyone has any good things to say bout this prog ?wasnt my 1st choice, but the recent US news ranked it 23rd (next only to baylor & cornell ??!!).
should I feel good about this ?
thanx

I interviewed there and thought it was a strong program- very good for outpt MSM, there's an injection clinic run by the program director and has connections to performing arts medicine with faculty that work with performers from Julliard and the whole Lincoln Center scene, which I personally think is really cool. The residents I spoke to said that they were happy- I happen to personally know 2 of them from before they were in residency so I know that they weren't just being diplomatic. and there's a 20 min express bus to Manhattan!

my two cents

thank you bronte, I do feel better !

I know a former resident from that program that has had good things to say. The injection clinic is a positive experience. Also, their graduates have done well with fellowships.

In the end it will be what you make of it.

Blue Angel,
I've matched into Monte as well. I am a US grad, and Monte was my first choice. I put the program ahead of all others in NYC area. I did this after I went back there for a second look. In one day I saw more in their clinics than in entire month at the other NYC program! Their patient population spans all walks of life and offers all the pathology you can think of. The only drawback is the amount of commuting. Their graduates who I personaly know are "proud" to have graduated from there. I am very happy that I've matched there! See you in 2007 🙂

Congratulations!!! for matching into one of the best PMR programs in the country. 👍 I am one proud product from this program. You should absolutely feel good and lucky about getting into this program. Let me tell you the reasons.

The leaders of this program are wonderful personalities and great humanbeings. Dr. Avital Fast and Dr. Thomas. Both are well recognized physiatrists in the field. This program has graduated more FMGs/IMGs from different parts of the world. This is not because AMGs dont apply to this program. It is just because Dr. Fast wants this program to be multicultural and multiethnic. This program reflects New York city with multiethnic flavors. You name it.! They have seen residents from different parts of the world. Japan, China, Korea, Africa, India, Pakistan, Egypt, Middle East excetras. Even the faculty in this program are from different countries. FMGs in this program are well qualified. Some ex-residents and current residents are fully trained orthopedic surgeons who can even teach faculty.

Drs. Thomas and Fast are very approachable. They are great teachers with friendly attitude. I have learnt so much from Dr, Fast's very popular kinesiology morning rounds. He has more knowledge about spine than a neurosurgeon. I will be always grateful for learning from his morning spine rounds when he teaches about reading spine films and MRIs. He will be so early in his office for teaching than any resident. He absolutely loves teaching spine to residents. Dr.Thomas is the program director. He never mistreats any resident. He is always, always helpful. You can approach him for anything professionally and personally. He is there only to help residents. I am yet to meet a wonderful and helpful humanbeing than Dr. Thomas in my life.
The beauty of montefiore program does not end with the leadership. Dr. Nori, Dr.Kim and Dr.Oh-park wont let you graduate without learning EMG skills. Dr. Kim will break your knuckles if you dont put your EMG electrodes in proper positions. I still have scars in my right hand. He is like your ambitious high school teacher. You dont get any respect from him until you know more EMG than him. Dr. Oh-park is EMG dynamite. You are going to learn a lot from Dr. Nissinoff and Dr. Therattil about inpatient rehab program. Dr. Tuluca is awesome.
Some people think montefiore program is located in trash. Yes! but sometimes you can find a diamond in trash!.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
Good Luck in your residency. You have made a wise choice in your career.

would anyone like to share thoughts on housing? specifically living in monte housing on brainbridge, and riverdale housing. in terms of commuting, how about from nj, or taking the metro north from ct, or westchester county???

Hey Blue Angel!
Congrats on your match. If you don't mind my asking, what school (IMG) did you graduate from?

Thanks

To be honest, any program this day and age in PM&R that is widely accepting international students is probably not a good program since the huge increase in american medical graduates interest in the field. Please also don't get confused with the rankings of the US News reports on rehab hospitals because they do not correspond equally in any way to residency programs.

I don't think you can make broad generalizations and assumptions like that- I interviewed at top programs, ranked 12 programs and Monte was in my top 4. I don't understand why this whole FMG thing is such a stigma. I think you have to take each program individually. Another "FMG" program I ranked 12 but it wasn't b'c of the FMG status. It totally depends on the program. I also agree that residency is what you make of it!

PS - I am an american grad and my friends the residents there at Monte are american grads from NYC med school

Here's another tidbit- two of my mom's closest friends graduated from Monte who were FMGs and went on to become very successful. I think people don't know what they are talking about when they put down other programs.

The monte housing is very good,
Two apartment buildings at Wayne Ave,
1-bed room is about 580/month,
Shuttles to Jcacobi, Weiler,
consider you will have meal card for 3 meals a day,
I think it is best choice.

Riverdale housing is more spacious, beautiful,
but more expensive,
Has shuttle too.
Good for a family...

I graduated from this program,
and I really like this program.

Yeap, I am a FMG.

   i couldnt agree with u more! these ppl are delusional if they think montefiore is the 23rd best pm&r residency program in the nation. 3 years ago, the program director was begging one caribbean school to send students over for a guaranteed match.

 :meanie:  🙁
