What do EP's do when they are not working? Is it possible to work part-time in a non-ED capacity, such as in internal medicine office or ICU during days when you're not in ED? Thx.

We rest and deal with the non-job aspects of being a functional adult. Some of us pursue non-clinical side gigs - admin, real estate, etc. A small group of us trained in EM/IM or have done critical care fellowships and work clinically in places other than the ED. Due to the demands both for EM as well as other disciplines of clinical medicine these combo jobs are usually hospital based and consist of alternating blocks of the two specialties, ie. not ICU shifts woven in between ED shifts.

I sleep, do academic work, and take care of other life things. I don't work that much less than my friends with "normal" (non-medicine) jobs. The difference is that most of them can make a quick phone call or even go to the dentist during the work day - these are things I have to squeeze in around my shifts.
