Internal moonlighting available CA2 onwards with limited availability & OK pay.
External moonlighting allowed but discouraged CA2 onwards. Very rarely done - generally the resident has some special skill (e.g. already boarded in another specialty)
At my program moonlighting starts the day you finish your orientation. Sometime between intern and CA-1 year. Basically they pay you 50 an hour beyond 630pm to stay in your room. Nice gig!!!

hey, n.p. -- don't forget at the end of ca2 year, after you do your second vascular month and do neuro you are eligible to take paid call and paid back up call on the weekends. i think the paid call person works 7-5 and gets $800, the back up gets $250 but more if they actually come in. i think i have it right but if not i hope my fellow ccf-ers will correct this....
Personally, I'd rather be at home than hang around till 6:30 pm for the money. Sorry, but that is not a nice gig in my opinion. A nice gig would be if the extra pay starts between 3-4:30 pm. And even then, If you are collecting a bunch of extra money but working 12 hr days every day, I'd rather pass. We can start moonlighting the latter half of CA1 year for $35/hr. Not that much money, but the hours are pretty nice.
Our program allows internal moonlighting 6 months into the CA-1 year, at a rate of $50/hr for 8 or 10 hr shifts on the weekend. The extra money is nice, and can be quite addicting!
Internal moonlighting covering the birth center on 12-hour weekend shifts here. I think you need to have completed one month of OB anesthesia and of course be in good academic standing, etc etc. Pay in the neighborhood of $500/shift.
So they get you guys at less than half the cost of an Anesthesia Nurse.

great for the residents. at my residency we routinely stayed til 530 minimum and got nothing.. zilch plust we took 10 in house calls a month.
I heard MCV pays 60 bucks an hour after 3 pm.... and the residents do not take call its a shift system. is taht true? anyone can verify>
Good deal for the residents, too ... no one's putting guns to their heads and making them work those extra hours, so they clearly feel it's worth it. I wouldn't give up my weekends for $500/day NOW, but if I had been permitted and had the opportunity as a resident, I'd sure have done it.
