I've heard through word of mouth about the following. However, I have not found concrete information to support this (or it may be true, and just not made known to the public) so I want to get some opinions.

Is it true that at some point before May 15, all medical schools find out where you have been accepted, and then depending on this, they offer you scholarships and use this to "compete" amongst themselves for you?

I am asking because I have already been accepted at my top 3 schools, and I'm not sure whether I should continue interviewing or not. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Not true, and I wouldn't keep interviewing since it's a waste of everyone's time and money. But there's nothing wrong with holding out for the best aid package.

Not true. We don't find out where you have been accepted only that you hold an acceptance, which after May 15th, you can only hold one. There is no competition other that how competitive you are among the group of applicants to the schools that you applied to. There is no shortage of high-quality applicants that schools have to compete. The competition is on your part.

oh, i was under the impression if a school accepted you they could also see at what other schools you have been accepted in march

I think schools know where you have been accpeted into after March 15, and I believe they will put a high value on you if you have been accepted to 10 other places.

PS: Everything I just said could be totally wrong.

nope.

the only reason to continue interviewing is if you are really not sure that these are indeed your top 3 schools. if there is absolutely nothing no other school could do to dissuade you from not attending any one of these threes, then save your money and time..

Thank you to those who have responded. Does anyone else have an opinion or valid information about this topic?

I'm actually pretty sure that a school who accepts you can see which other schools have accepted you sometime in march. (I think I heard this during one of my interview days, but my memory's a little fuzzy)

whether they use this information to hand out recruitment scholarships... i don't know.

Schools report when student holds an acceptance to the AAMC and conversely the AAMC reports these holds back. I don't think they know which schools they are to anymore than they would know which schools you applied to.

I don't think it really matters if you don't mind the money spent on traveling to interviews to try to get into as many schools as possible, just make sure to remove your holds before they do it for you.

I don't think anyone would be able to prove that med schools would offer you scholarships if they knew you had other coices. HOWEVER, I would say that, for people who had the fortune of multiple acceptance, the chances of merit scholarships is greatly increased. This student was clearly competitive, and it possible that one or more schools will determine them to be good enough for merit scholarship. This is not the same as them competing with eachother, rather that a student who has a dozen acceptances in his or her pocket is likely to be competitive enough at one of their schools to get a scholarship.

From my University of Michigan interview, I recall the Dean explicitly saying that schools see exactly which other schools you have received acceptances from after March 15th. He also went on to say that U of M uses scholarship money to draw the best students away from other attractive schools that they have received acceptances at.

So, at least at michigan, the OP is mostly correct. However, U of M made it clear that more money would be thrown at students that had a Harvard type acceptance than at a less prestigious school... So unless your new interviews are at some equally prestigious schools, don't bother.
