So if the average is a 17, then why do people freak out when they get an 18? I mean, do only half the people that apply get into dental school? Because just as many people should get below the average as above the average. Get what i am saying?
 
I think a lot of people "freak out" because the particular school they want to get in to has a higher standard than the average. For example if they got a 17 and the average acceptance score is a 21 their chances would be pretty low.

Also, if they have a combination of average application stats they're less likely to stand out.
