Completely random questions that I was legitimately curious about and thought would be nice to have them clarified earlier on rather than later.

How accurate are the applicant numbers? As in how many people apply to a school. I realize a lot of people apply to multiple schools and have several options and drop schools closing their application, but how many students just don't meet the actual pre-requisite criteria?

How do you pay for applications and interview expenses? Loans, work, parents, other...
Everything I make from work goes right into rent, food, phone, and car insurance. So if I need to find a way to save some money back for it now, then I'll find a way. Which I'll more than likely start doing anyways, but I'm also still curious to see how everyone else does it.

I've been a lurker for quite some time and I've never really heard of anyone talk about UMKC, MOSDOH, or the University of Oklahoma. Is there a particular reason why people don't have these schools on their list? Are they simply just instate friendly, in the middle of nowhere, or are lower tier schools?

When do you ask your dentists that you job shadowed for a LOR? Do you ask when you're applying for dental schools or do you ask them when you're done shadowing them so everything is fresh in their minds?

question 1. the dental central application does publish the total # of applicant and the total # of acceptee with the average schools each applicant apply (you can look at it in a book online)

Question 2: application/interview fee is from loan, work, credit, and other sources. Yes. Some people choose to open a 1 year-no-interest credit card and use it to apply. when they get in, they use the dental school's loan to pay it off. If they don't get in, idk how .

question 3. prob these schools are heavy instate like texas schools, not a lot of people talk about it because its heavy in state.

QUesiton 4:dentist's LOR should be asked after you're done shadowing if you are afraid he/she will not do it in a timely manner. You can pay for interfolio which stores your letter and send it to the central app. LORs can come after your application is submitted.

Thanks for replying!
I'll have to look around for the book, although it's not such a big deal I've just been curious about it. As for paying for interviews and travel expenses, looks like I'm going to have to start saving some money back some how or pick up another job.
I guess I can't complain about them being heavy instate schools, because that's awesome for me, although I believe MOSDOH doesn't care where you're from as they're a private school, which I just found out.
I'm completely ignorant when it comes to LOR's. I know how many I need and who to get them from, but that's about it. I had no idea that you couldn't send them in yourself, or can you?

The Book is produced by central dental application. the new version is coming out soon. I don't want to say a number because it may be wrong but (2-3k applicant a school x 64 dental school ~140-150k total applications (accounting for schools with 1k applicant), but I believe i remember around 50k predental student apply and around 4-5k got accepted.

you used a service (like interfolio) which requires the writer to upload the letter himself/herself (you can't because you have to waive your right to read) but from there, you can send it to dental schools.

Yea, save some money but not at a cost of enhancing your application, find some money source available and use it I think as a few months are a short time to save 3000$

The entering class of 2018 had 12,162 applicants and 5,769 students matriculate into dental school. I'm very happy there aren't 50k students :wow: applying!!!

huh...peeps were telling me only 1 out of every 5-7 pre dentals get in. Clearly I've been lied too.

The stats of the schools that I applied to are roughly like these (very roughly estimated):
Average per school: 1500-2200 applied, in that 300-400 interviewed, 150-250 accepted, 80-130 seats available.
Numbers can be different for different schools.

yeah same with me, but still, with a total of 12,000+ applying and around 5700+ getting in. That's still a more of a 48% chance of getting in compared to the stats some people say of a 1/5, you know what i mean? haha

yea many east coast dental school are super in state as you have the minimum stats you are in for sure. The rest, 1 in 5 sounds about right due to competition.

Yeah, statistically speaking it's not mission impossible. Make sure you choose schools wisely based on stats and stay away from out-of-state unfriendly schools (I didn't know those two important criteria for 5 out of the 12 schools that I applied to and basically threw money into the toilet....darn it, should have been on SDN longer haha). If you have average stats 3.4-3.5 GPAs, 18-19 DAT, 100 hrs shadowing, 100 hrs volunteering, you should get some interviews. 2-3 (preferably 3) interviews are golden because I didn't know what to expect in the first one and messed up badly (always learn and improve from the bad interviews, right?).
But of course, there is also some luck involved because the applications are reviewed by humans not machine.

That number is way too high to be right.

When you say 3.4-3.5 GPA, is that the cGPA or the sGPA? Just wanting clarity as I've always been confused on what everyone on here claims as their GPA.

3.4-3.5 cGPA, 3.4-3.5 sGPA. Maybe I am wrong because I am a Biochem major so cGPA is not that much different from sGPA

Alright thanks! I just wasn't too sure and didn't want to say something wrong later on down the road.
